How to safely gain weight with Gilbert Syndrome?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a patient with Gilbert syndrome. My height is approximately 5 feet 6 inches (167 cm), but my weight is only about 117 pounds. Due to Gilbert syndrome, I am unable to consume very rich protein foods, and I also cannot engage in highly strenuous exercises such as weight training.

Could you please advise me on an Ayurvedic product that may help me gain weight safely? Additionally, could you suggest suitable exercises that would help with weight gain and are appropriate for my health condition?

Since I have been living with Gilbert syndrome, it would be very helpful if your recommendations could consider this medical condition. Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Gilbert syndrome is a mild genetic liver condition that leads to slightly elevated bilirubin levels in the blood. While generally harmless, it may cause mild jaundice (a yellow discoloration of the body tissue resulting from the accumulation of excess bilirubin) during fasting, stress, or illness.

There is no official list of foods to be avoided. It would be recommended that you:

1. Eat healthy food, as diet plays an important role in managing this condition.

2. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables.

3. Eat balanced meals regularly and avoid skipping meals, as fasting can worsen symptoms.

4. Limit oily, fatty, and sugary foods, and reduce excessive carbohydrate intake from rice, pasta, bread, and potatoes if you notice intolerance. Complete protein restriction is usually unnecessary.

5. Try egg whites, sprouts, dals (lentils), and lean meats like chicken or fish, introducing them gradually if digestion is an issue.

6. You may also consider a supplement such as protein powder, which can be mixed into dough, meals, or a post-workout drink to help meet protein needs.

As very strenuous exercises like weight training might not suit you, focus on yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises). These gently tone the body, improve digestion, and may support healthy weight gain. Practicing under the guidance of a certified instructor ensures safety and proper technique.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
