What methods can help overcome constipation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old male. I recently started antibiotic medication, which caused constipation. After taking a single prescription and an injection for 15 to 17 days, I became constipated again for a week. The doctor prescribed an injection, but it provided no relief. I tried castor oil and other remedies, but nothing worked, including some strong laxatives. I consulted another doctor who prescribed some medications, syrup, and Abhayarishta, but I still experienced no relief. The doctor then gave me Metronidazole 400 mg, along with two additional tablets: Pantoprazole for abdominal discomfort and digestion, and Softovac churna. I felt better once my symptoms subsided.

However, the problem recurred. During this time, I took two types of antibiotics and did not have a bowel movement for nine days. After consuming a lot of milk of magnesia, churna, and other remedies, I had a semi-solid stool.

In the past seven days, I have tried virtually everything, including churna, Softovac churna, castor oil (both alone and in tea), among other things. Despite this, there was no progress, so I discontinued the antibiotic use. Another doctor then prescribed some medications, including multivitamins, a gut base sachet (four sachets), Levosulpiride and Rabeprazole, and Lactitol and Ispaghula granules. Last night, I took two sachets of the gut base and one full bottle cap of Lactitol and Ispaghula granules, but I could barely pass stool.

What should be done if laxatives do not relieve constipation?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your query and understand your concern. I saw the attached files of the medication you sent (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity). It appears you are taking numerous medications, some on the advice of your doctor and others on your own. Frequent changes in physicians and medications have disrupted your natural bowel pattern and are causing constipation. Additionally, try to avoid placing yourself under excessive stress, as it can exacerbate the issue. I also recommend improving your lifestyle and eating habits. Here are some suggestions that may benefit you:

  1. Drink plenty of water: Aim for a minimum of 0.52 to 0.79 gallons per day. Drink water frequently throughout the day.
  2. Morning routine: Upon waking, drink one or two glasses of lukewarm water.
  3. Diet: Consume fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain cereals. Instead of three large meals, opt for five smaller meals throughout the day.
  4. Salads: Have two to three servings of salads daily, but eat them separately from your main meals.
  5. Food choices: Avoid excessive spicy foods, junk food, and white bread.
  6. Beverages: Limit your intake of tea, coffee, and caffeinated drinks.
  7. Sleep: Ensure you get adequate sleep, aiming for six to eight hours a night. Go to bed before midnight, wake up early, and try to train your bowel to evacuate at a consistent time. This may take some time, but once you establish the habit, it should become easier.
  8. Exercise: Walk daily for at least 30 minutes.
  9. Bowel movements: Avoid straining during defecation.
  10. Local care: Apply mustard oil or coconut oil gently to the anal area at night.
  11. Medication: Consider taking only one or two types of medicine, whether allopathic or Ayurvedic, as excessive medication can be harmful in the long run. Avoid prolonged use of any medication to prevent dependency.
  12. Ayurvedic option: If you prefer Ayurvedic medicine, you may try syrup Picrolex (sodium picosulfate and magnesium citrate), and take two teaspoons in the evening with lukewarm water for seven to ten days. Once bowel movements normalize, you can discontinue use. Another medication called Triphala churna, take 0.07 to 0.105 ounces with one glass of lukewarm milk at night for two to three weeks.

I encourage you to follow these recommendations regularly and you should start to see positive results. Be patient, as it may take some time. If you experience any emergencies, please consult a nearby physician.

I hope this information is helpful.

Thank you.
