What Ayurvedic medicines can help manage constipation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 39-year-old male weighing around 154 pounds and am currently taking multivitamins. For the past two weeks, I have been experiencing pain and bleeding during defecation. It began after straining due to hard stool. I am not constipated. Upon touching, I can feel two external hemorrhoids and possibly a fissure, though I am not certain. I have increased my fruit intake and have been applying Sunarin cream, but it has not provided much relief. Can you suggest any Ayurvedic tablets?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Sometimes, external hemorrhoids do not cause problems, but due to factors like constipation and others, they can lead to health issues. You should focus on preventing constipation. I am recommending some Ayurvedic medicines, which you should continue for at least two to three months. Please inform me of any other medications you are currently taking for any health conditions, as this is important for proper treatment. Ensure you follow a fiber-rich diet, including fruits and vegetables, to avoid constipation. The treatment plan is as follows:

  1. Arshhar vati: One tablet twice a day after meals.
  2. Abhayarishta: Two teaspoons twice a day after meals.
  3. Pilex ointment: For external application.
  4. Isabgol (psyllium husk) powder: Take it at night before bed.

Please provide details of any other medications or health conditions you may have. Follow up after seven days.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have vestibular neuritis, but I am not taking any medication for it. I hope that's okay. Could you please prescribe a more affordable alternative to Arshhar vati tablets? The price is a bit high.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You can take Pilex tablets as a replacement for Arshhar vati, if available.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have been taking Sunarin tablets twice a day, Abhayarishta twice a day, and Isabgol powder once at night, as per your consultation. The bleeding stopped after one day, and after 20 days, the pain after defecation also ceased. Should I continue the treatment as you initially suggested for two to three months?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You should continue this treatment for at least a month, as Ayurvedic medicines typically require a duration of three months for full effect. Additionally, be cautious about constipation. Apply the cream only if pain and bleeding occur. Maintain a fiber-rich diet and avoid spicy and oily foods. Take one Vati twice a day. I recommend a follow-up after 15 days.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

The two-month treatment period is over. I no longer experience pain after defecation, and there has been no bleeding, only once or twice previously. Should I continue the treatment for the final month?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There are no side effects from the Ayurvedic treatment, which is planned for two to three months. As you have recovered about 80 percent now, you should continue taking Isabgol powder at night and Abhayarishta after meals for at least one more month. Maintain a fiber-rich diet and manage your constipation. Avoid oily and spicy foods. You can stop the treatment after one month. I recommend a follow-up after 15 days.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have completed three months of treatment. For the last month, I only took Isabgol powder and Abhayarishta. I no longer have bleeding, but I still experience occasional pain after defecation. What should I do next?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I recommend continuing only Abhayarishta syrup for the next month and maintaining a fiber-rich diet. There is no need to continue any other medication. Include salads in your regular diet. Follow up after one month.

Thank you.
