Is it healthy to use Ayurvedic medicine for constipation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I experience regular constipation and occasional stomach pain. Occasionally, I take half a tablet of Anuloma once a week or on a particular day, and this usually helps me feel better for a few days. I tend to have good bowel movements when I drink plenty of water, although I still experience constipation at times. Is it healthy to use Anuloma intermittently?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There are several causes of constipation and irregular bowel movements, including lack of exercise and physical activity, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, consumption of oily and fried junk foods, alcohol consumption, and smoking habits. Sometimes, neurological issues may also contribute to constipation. Drinking plenty of water stimulates bowel movements and facilitates regularity. You may consider taking Anuloma (ajamoda, cumin, haritaki, and senna) tablets as a good laxative medicine. However, it is important to also make changes to your diet and lifestyle. Here are some useful tips to help address your concerns:

  1. Avoid spicy and fried junk foods.
  2. Eat fibrous foods, fruits, and green leafy vegetables.
  3. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, if you have these habits.
  4. Limit tea and coffee intake.
  5. Practice regular yoga, such as Kapalbhati, Mandukasana, and Ardhamatsyendrasana, to improve metabolism and bowel movements.
  6. Drink plenty of water.

Additionally, you may consider incorporating some Ayurvedic medicines along with lifestyle changes:

  1. Panchasakar churna (svarna patri, sunthi, and misreya) 0.11 ounces twice a day with warm water after meals.
  2. Arogyavardhini vati (shudha mercury, shudha gandhak, and shudha guggul) one tablet twice a day with warm water after meals.
  3. Abhayarishtam (haritaki, vidanga, and madhuka kusuma) one tablespoon twice a day with an equal amount of water after meals.

Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with take the medicines with their consent. Follow these recommendations and reassess your condition after fifteen days.

Thanks and regards.
