What is the Ayurvedic remedy for elderly constipation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My mother aged 70 is suffering from chronic irregular emptying of bowels. Sometimes, she goes to the toilet once in three days and the quantity of stool will be very less. There is no problem with the form of stools. She tried taking Triphala tablets in the morning and evening for several months and tried to eat fiber regularly, but still, there is no improvement.

Lavan bhaskar churna helps at times, but she avoids it as she suffers from high BP. She has been taking Olvance 20 (Olmesartan) once in the morning for high BP. Can you propose some remedy for the constipation? She does not want to take any laxatives, which are habit forming.

Kindly help.

Answered by Dr. Santhosh M D

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is good to know that she has already made some dietary changes and tried Triphala tablets on and off.

Constipation is a common problem in elderly people due to increased Vata, which causes dryness.

Avoid using any medication continuously for more than three months, as it may create dependency. Always drink warm water. She can continue with Triphala tablets, and you can follow my advice.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at icliniq.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

The probable cause is an increase in Vata and aging, leading to irritable bowel syndrome with constipation.

Treatment plan

The treatment plan includes taking two teaspoons of Kalyanaka Gulam at bedtime with a glass of warm water, or alternatively, two tablets of Anuloma DS at bedtime with a glass of warm water. Visiting an Ayurveda treatment center to inquire about Ksheera Basti (milk enema) is recommended.

Preventive measures

Preventive measures include eating plenty of fibrous foods, drinking more warm water, and avoiding processed foods.

Regarding follow up

Revert back after four weeks to an ayurveda specialist.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Are there any yogic asanas that you can suggest to ease this problem?

Answered by Dr. Santhosh M D

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Among the yogic asanas, the most important is Pavanamuktasana. She can also learn Pavanamuktasana Kriya and Shankha Prakshalana Kriya from an experienced trainer.

Considering her age, practicing yoga is beneficial, especially if she has done yoga in the past.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
