How to restore hemoglobin levels in chronic kidney disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My father has chronic kidney disease. We have been giving him Ayurvedic treatment for the last three years, and his condition was stable. However, his hemoglobin level has dropped to five over the last six months. His phosphorus level is 9.1, with a slight calcium deficiency. Due to the low hemoglobin levels, we consulted a nephrologist who suggested infusing two units of blood (RBC), which has been done. The nephrologist prescribed Sevcar 800 mg, Shelcal 500 mg, and Calcite 25 mg tablets.

Since the blood transfusion, he has been experiencing severe body pain and is unable to sleep. I would like to replace the above-mentioned medicines with Ayurvedic alternatives that are free of metals (Bhasma) and act as Vitamin D, phosphorus binders, and iron supplements. Additionally, is there any safe pain reliever in Ayurveda for his condition? Please suggest medicines without metals (Bhasma).

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I just read your query. His body ache is mainly due to a deficiency of nutrients, and the medication you are giving him is fine. In Ayurveda, supplements for iron and calcium deficiencies typically contain Bhasma, which includes metals. As for the pain, use Mahanarayan oil (containing Ashwagandha, Bilva, and Gokhuru) and gently massage his whole body twice a day. This will help manage his body aches to a great extent.

I hope you understand my point.

Thank you.
