Introduction:

The bandhas in yoga are referred to as "energetic locks.” Bandhas are used to strengthen the yoga practice through the mind and body. The yogi thinks that "if we master our body, we can master our soul" through the use of bandhas in yoga.

What Are Bandhas?

Bandhas are powerful yogic practices for controlling and redirecting the flow of prana, or energy, throughout the body. Mula bandha, uddiyana bandha, and jalandhara bandha are the three major bandhas in yoga. Mula bandha is achieved by clenching the pelvic floor muscles and redirecting the upward flow of energy upward to merge with the upward flow of energy. Pulling the abdomen in and up stimulates the digestive organs, regulates the flow of prana, and improves overall health. To regulate the flow of energy between the head and the rest of the body, Jalandhar bandha requires tucking the chin down and bringing the rear of the head upward while pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth.

What Are the Types of Bandhas?

There are four main bandhas in yoga, but according to hatha yoga, there are six types of bandhas, which include two minor bandhas and three major bandhas, and one maha bandha. They are as follows:

1. Minor Bandhas: These minor bandhas are performed by locking the hands and feet area. These minor bandhas are classified into two bandhas. They are as follows:

  • Hasta bandha (hand lock).

  • Pada bandha (feet lock).

2. Major Bandhas: The major bandhas are performed by locking muscles near the abdomen, pelvic region, and throat. These major bandhas are classified into three. They are as follows

  • Mula bandha.

  • Uddiyana bandha.

  • Jalandhara bandha.

3. Maha Bandha: Maha bandha is performed by locking the whole body with major bandhas altogether.

How to Practice Bandhas?

There are six types of Bandhas performed in hatha yoga. They are explained in detail below.

  • Hasta bandha.

  • Pada bandha.

  • Mula bandha.

  • Uddiyana bandha.

  • Jalandhara bandha.

  • Mula bandha.

1. Hasta Bandha: The name hasta bandha itself explains that hasta bandha means "hand lock." This bandha locks the prana in the hands and arms. Hasta bandha activates the energy channels in the arms. This hasta bandha improves the strength in yoga asana during a handstand.

Procedure:

During the hasta bandha, both hands are placed on the yoga mat, and spread all fingers out. Put the body weight on the hands. The palms of the hands should be pressed firmly on a mat with padded fingers. The heels of the palm should be left light so the suction obtains in the center of the palm.

2. Pada Bandha: The word pada bandha means "legs lock." It is performed by locking the feet of the legs and activating the arches of the feet. This bandha improves strength and stability in yoga practice. Pada bandha absorbs energy from the earth and activates the prana in the feet, and energizes the channel in the body.

Procedure:

Place the feet on a mat by lifting the toes and spreading them out. There are three arches in pada bandha, such as big toe to little toe, little to ankle, and ankle to big toe. These arches form a triangle to distribute the weight among the arches in the foot. It also can be done by placing the ball under the foot.

3. Mula Bandha:

The mula bandha means "root lock."This is performed by locking the energy at the pelvic region of the body. Mula bandha contracts the perineal muscle to lock the energy in the pelvic region.

4. Uddiyana Bandha: The uddiyana bandha is done by lifting the abdomen to lock; this is performed to lock the energy in the abdomen. The abdomen lock is done during this bandhas by drawing the navel in and upward.

5. Jalandhara Bandha: The jalandhara bandha locks the prana in the throat or chin region.

6. Maha Bandha: The maha bandha is performed with three major bandhas, mula bandha, jalandhara bandha, and uddiyana bandha, to maintain the cardiovascular system.

What Are the Benefits of Bandhas in Yoga?

The benefits of bandhas are as follows:

  • Bandhas are used in yoga to control and strengthen the brain.

  • It improves the strength of the spine.

  • It stimulates all glands of the endocrine system.

  • It supports and activates the parts of the body when the bandhas are performed.

  • The hasta bandha relieves pain in the wrist and develops strength in the arms.

  • The pada bandha improves strength and tones the lower region of the body.

  • The mula bandha enhances the power in the pelvic area and relaxes the brain from mental stress.

  • The uddiyana bandha improves strength in the abdominal region and also. Refreshes the mind and body to look young and good.

  • The jalandhara bandha improves body strength and reduces anxiet in the brain.

  • The maha bandha plays the role of mula bandha,uddiyana bandha,jalandhar bandha, Improves strength and maintains the cardiovascular region.

What Are the Precautions Followed During Bandhas in Yoga?

The precautions are mentioned below. They are as follows:

  • Avoid bandhas in yoga during the pregnancy period.

  • Avoid any illness and discomfort health conditions.

  • Avoid doing bandhas if one experiences any symptoms of cardiac problems such as high blood pressure.

  • Avoid any abdominal disorders.

  • Avoid if there are discomfort or panic attacks.

  • The bandhas should be performed by an experienced yoga expert.
