Is it possible to treat UTIs with Ayurvedic medicine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is it harmful to treat a UTI (urinary tract infection) with Ayurveda? I am a 20-year-old male experiencing difficulty while urinating. A neurologist has reviewed my ultrasound results, which indicate a normal-sized prostate with no neurogenic component. The remaining issue seems to be an infection. The ultrasound also shows urethritis (infection of the urethra) and mild cystitis (bladder inflammation), while everything else from the prostate to the kidneys appears normal.

I came across information on health forums suggesting that using Ayurveda for UTIs could potentially lead to kidney disorders. Is this accurate? I am dealing with a UTI and experiencing incomplete bladder emptying and occasional frequency, but I prefer not to take antibiotics. What should I do? Can Ayurveda effectively treat UTIs, and is there a risk of kidney disorders associated with it? This issue is significantly affecting my quality of life and studies.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

It is important to note that Ayurvedic medicines when used correctly, do not cause kidney damage. However, it is essential to follow the prescribed dosage and duration for these medications. Consulting with a physician ensures safe usage. In the case of UTIs (urinary tract infections), allopathic medicine often prescribes antibiotics, which can also have potential side effects. Nevertheless, when used under the guidance of a physician, the risk of side effects is minimized.

To address your concern, I recommend staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water. Fluids are beneficial for managing a UTI. Avoid holding in urine when you feel the urge to urinate, maintain good hygiene practices, ensure you get adequate sleep, and try to go to bed before midnight.

Regarding medication, please consult your physician before starting any treatment. Here are some Ayurvedic options you might discuss with them:

  1. Syrup Neeri (contains purified asphaltum 200 mg, raphanus sativus ash 150 mg, piper cubeba 100 mg, rock salt 50 mg, boerhaavia diffusa 500 mg, sugarcane extract 500 mg, parmelia perlata 450 mg, tribulus terrestris 450 mg, crataeva nurvala 400 mg, dolichos biflorus 400 mg, mimosa pudica 100 mg, solanum nigrum 100 mg, and cucumis): Take two teaspoons with water twice daily for four weeks.
  2. Capsule Punarnava (boerhaavia diffusa): Take one capsule twice daily with water for two weeks.

By following these guidelines consistently, you should see positive results. It is also crucial to manage stress, as excessive stress can exacerbate your condition.

I hope this helps. For further inquiries, feel free to consult me at icliniq.com.

Thank you.

Regarding follow up

Follow-up should be done after three weeks.
