Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a parasitic infection, and an Ayurveda expert has prescribed Vidangarishta and Balarishta to treat helminths, with a dosage of two teaspoons of each medicine twice daily. However, both medicines contain five to 10 percent self-generated alcohol, and I am sensitive to alcohol. Could you suggest an easy way to evaporate this alcohol?
Would it be acceptable to mix two teaspoons of each medicine in a cup and leave it open at room temperature? If so, how long would it take for the alcohol content to evaporate completely? Alternatively, if I keep the bottles of these medicines open at room temperature for several days, would that help in evaporating all the alcohol? If so, could you specify the duration?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
The alcohol content in the drug acts as a preservative, so it is best not to evaporate it, as doing so could reduce its shelf life. Instead, I suggest mixing the prescribed dose with hot water, stirring it well, and waiting for ten minutes before consuming it. The heat will help evaporate the alcohol. Additionally, consuming buttermilk or lemon juice immediately (within 10 to 30 minutes) after taking the alcohol-based Ayurvedic medicine can help neutralize its effects. This is a recommended practice.
Alternatively, you could ask your physician to prescribe an alternative medicine without alcohol. Similar herbal ingredients are available in different forms (such as kashaya, choorna, aristam, etc.), and you can achieve the same effect with a different formulation.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thanks for the reply.
Could you please recommend the best alternative forms of these two drugs that do not contain any alcohol? I would prefer them in tablet form or as water-extracted kashaya. The doctor is only available for online consultations and has emailed me stating that I must take the medication despite the alcohol content, which causes skin flare-ups even in low doses. I would appreciate your suggestions for the best alternatives. I will present these options to him for consideration, either now or in the future.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I can understand your situation.
For treating helminths, take one tablet of Albendazole at night on the first day, followed by one tablet of Mebendazole twice daily for the next three days. This is a straightforward method for dealing with intestinal worms. This course should be repeated every six months. If pinworms around the anal region cause itching at night, wash the area with water, dry it with a towel, and immediately wash the affected clothes. Apply talcum powder to the anal region. This will help eliminate worms that have come to the anal area to lay eggs. Use this method whenever itching occurs. Note that this is only for pinworms, not for intra-intestinal worms.
If you do not prefer this method or if it proves ineffective, you may consider Ayurvedic treatments for worms, as follows:
The doctor may have prescribed Balarishta to improve general health. There are other alternatives, such as ashwagandha tablets. Please seek further suggestions from him regarding these alternatives.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I have recently started taking anti-helminthic medicines, primarily Vidanga, as discussed in my previous email. The expert advised me to continue this treatment for one month. In this email, I would like to explain my condition in detail and request a treatment recommendation that you believe would be most effective for my specific health concerns. I plan to start this treatment if my current medications do not show any benefit after a month.
I have a complex health issue. A microbiologist diagnosed me with Strongyloides stercoralis after blood tests and a detailed history. The infection is systemic, affecting my skin, brain, blood, and other organs. I was infested as an infant, so I have been experiencing symptoms for over 40 years. My immune system was compromised early on due to regular steroid use for asthma, and the infestation became chronic when I was 12 years old. The worms carry bacteria such as Staphylococcus and E. coli (Escherichia coli) and hide in their biofilm, making the condition deeply rooted. Allopathic treatments, including Ivermectin and Albendazole, have been ineffective.
Considering my weight, age, height, and the complexity of my condition, could you suggest appropriate natural remedies and dosages using your knowledge of naturopathy, Siddha, herbs, etc.? Additionally, I have a related question. A few months ago, I ordered some Ayurvedic medicines that are said to help against Strongyloides, but I did not start taking them as I was unsure about the dosages and did not want to self-medicate. The medicines are Kottakkal’s krimighnavatika tablets and Vyas’ kriminol syrup. If these can help systemically, I would appreciate it if you could provide the recommended dosages and duration for these medicines as well.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
After diagnosing Strongyloides stercoralis, I have reconsidered the approach. The herbal drugs mentioned may effectively target and destroy worms in the intestine but might not be as effective against worms residing in other body organs outside the intestine. Additionally, this worm impacts your immune system and causes various allergic symptoms. Therefore, I would recommend two specific drugs that can target the worm and also enhance your immune system to help eradicate it. This approach aims to eliminate the infection and prevent further allergic symptoms.
To address intestinal worms, continue using Vidanga-based drugs and Kriminol syrup for one to two months.
Purchase these two drugs and take them twice daily after meals. This regimen should help address both the worm infestation and the allergic symptoms, and improve your overall immunity.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I have purchased the medicines you recommended. Correcting my immune system with them will clearly take time given the long-standing nature of my condition. I would like to add another product to my regimen. I noticed that you have expertise in Ayush therapies. Is there a remedy in Unani medicine that could help address Strongyloides in the blood?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
The same herbs are used in the Unani system for similar purposes. However, other Unani therapies, such as cupping and leech therapy, are not typically used for treating Strongyloides. Nonetheless, you might want to consult an Unani expert for further guidance.
Thank you.
