Can leaving face wash on the face for an extended period lead to dehydration?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I accidentally used my face wash as a night cream and unintentionally left it on my face overnight. As a result, my face has become dehydrated and irritated. Could you please suggest some ayurvedic remedies I can easily make at home to alleviate these issues? I would appreciate it if the remedies could be primarily Ayurvedic in nature.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for sharing your concerns.

I understand that mistakenly using face wash as a night cream has caused dehydration and irritation to your skin. Here are some Ayurvedic remedies that can help alleviate these issues:

  1. Refrain from using harsh soaps on your face, which can further dry out your skin.
  2. Use a banana and honey mask. Mash one banana and add one teaspoon of honey. Apply this mixture to your face and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water. Avoid using excessively hot water as it can also contribute to dryness.
  3. Aloe vera gel is excellent for dry skin. You can use store-bought aloe vera gel or extract fresh gel from an aloe vera plant. Apply the gel once or twice a day to your face.
  4. Before bed, apply a thin layer of coconut oil to your face. Coconut oil is highly beneficial for reducing irritation and moisturizing dry skin.
  5. Olive oil, rose water, honey, and egg yolk face mask. Create a face mask using olive oil, rose water, honey, and, if you use eggs, an egg yolk. Apply the mask to your face for 15 minutes, then rinse it off. You can use this mask two or three times a week.
  6. Drink eight to ten glasses of water daily to keep your body and skin hydrated.
  7. Consume more fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, and other dairy products to nourish your skin from within.
  8. Avoid alcohol-based products. Steer clear of alcohol-based products for your face as they can exacerbate dryness.
  9. Sun protection. Prioritize wearing sunscreen lotion when going out in the sun. Also, avoid sitting too close to fire or in excessively cold air-conditioned environments until your skin returns to normal, as these factors can further dry out your skin.
  10. Consistency is the key. Incorporate these remedies into your routine regularly, and you should see positive results within two to three days.

I hope these suggestions help.

Thank you.
