Ringworm is also known as dermatophytosis. It is a fungal infection affecting the skin. Initially, it appears as red patches on the affected surface of the skin, and later, it spreads to other parts of the body. It can affect the scalp, feet, nails, groin, and beard. It is caused by three types of fungi such as trichophyton, Microsporum, and epidermophyton. It is caused by having contact with infected persons and by sharing items harboring fungus. Ringworm affecting scalp is referred to as tinea capitis, ringworm affecting body is called tinea corporis, ringworm affecting groin, inner thighs, and buttocks is referred to as tinea cruris, and ringworm affecting food is called athlete's foot. It is treated by using anti-fungal skin creams.
