How to manage swelling in the leg in someone with psoriasis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with psoriasis 15 years ago, and am undergoing treatment. Medications are Patoladi Kashayam before food in the morning, Khadiraristam two and a half tablespoons two times, and two Atrisor tablets with it. I also take two Manjishtadi tablets twice a day with the Dhanthapala oil application.

I have a swelling on my legs where I have the problem. Is it common? The doctor has asked me to apply Nalpamaradi choornam with curd on my body. Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the pictures (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). Psoriasis lesions look like it is healing gradually, so no need to worry, and you are on the right medications.

If you have swelling all over the ankles and legs, it may be edema. Edema is caused when there is fluid accumulation inside. Take Barley gruel to reduce the swelling. Please answer the following questions so that I can help you further.

1. Do you have swelling in your leg or over the psoriasis skin?

2. Are you allergic to any food?

3. Is your digestion good?

4. Do you have stiffness in your legs?

5. Do you have any issues with urinating? Do you pass motion regularly?

For swelling and edema in the leg, you can take the following medications with your current medicines.

1. Chandraprabha vati, (Chandraprabha, Vachu, Musta) morning and night before food.

2. Gokshuradi guggulu, (Gokshura, Shuddha guggulu, Pippali) morning and night after food.

If your swelling is increasing day by day, you should get a kidney function test and check for psoriatic arthritis (a form of arthritis that affects some people who have psoriasis). Please contact a proper panchakarma center.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your kind reply, it was very informative.

The swelling is where I have psoriasis (on my legs) and not on my feet or ankles. But I have leg stiffness while stretching, and itching.

My digestion is fine, and for purgation, my doctor has given Patoladi lehyam. I do not have any problem with urination. The doctor advised me to drink plenty of water.

On the skin, I am applying Nalpamaradi powder in curd and Laburnum leaf paste. Is it good? Also, I am taking Biogest now. Please advise.

Thank you once again.

Applying Nalpamaradi choornam (Tree barks of fig Tree ), Ithi (Indian laurel), Arayal (peepal tree), and Peral (Banyan tree)) will be helpful for psoriasis and itching. You can also apply Psoria oil (Stri Kutaja, Wrightia tinctoria leaves, and Coconut oil) and reduce salt intake in your food.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Can you please advise me on how many days I need to take the medications that you have prescribed?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The only medicine I prescribed you was Psoria oil. This can be applied for two to three months based on the improvement of your condition.

The other two tablets I have told you are for ankle swelling, which I misunderstood. So please continue the medicines which your doctor gave you. They will be effective.

Please be cautious about your diet. You can apply Nalpamaradhi choornam and Laburnum leaf paste also. Taking Gandhaka rasayana tablet, morning and night after food will be helpful.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
