Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having a PCOD problem, and my husband is a cancer patient. After completing the entire treatment as per the doctor's advice, we planned for naturally conceiving. But I have a period cycle of 28 days. For the past three months, I have been getting a period of 30 days. Please suggest any medicine for pregnancy. We have already tried IVF, and it failed. I take folic acid tablets currently.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I just read your query. First of all, let me tell you it does not matter if the cycle is varying from 28 to 30 days. The normal cycle may vary from 28 to 35 days from person to person and sometimes due to environmental reasons. You did not mention your husband's current health status. Is he fine now or under any treatment? Has he performed any semen analysis or any other test, and are those reports fine? Because for conception, both partners should be healthy.

Now coming to your problem, in PCOD (polycystic ovary disease), the ovaries of a woman start producing more androgens, which hinders the growth of the ovum, and sometimes the ovum does not form properly, or sometimes anovulation (cycle without ovum formation) occurs. Other associated problems like obesity, insulin resistance, disturbed menstrual cycle, growth of hairs on the face, etc may occur. You need to perform an ultrasound and hormonal studies like FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), prolactin, testosterone, thyroid profile, hemoglobin, blood sugar, and urine routine. Infertility may be because of many reasons like stress, lifestyle, diet, obesity, sometimes profession (like working in extremely hot conditions, etc), underlying disease, etc. You can try naturally for six months to one year for conception, and later on, you can opt for IVF (in-vitro fertilization) or other techniques. Remember, the ovulation day is mostly considered the 14th day of a woman's menstrual cycle. You can calculate it from the first day of your menstrual cycle. But not only the 14th day, try from the 12th to the 15th day. These days, mostly ovulation occurs, and chances of getting pregnant are higher. But sometimes the ovum is not formed properly, or may have a size less than normal, or the ovum does not break, so conception does not occur. To help this out, you can go for an ovulation study in a nearby scan center and can know the exact day of ovulation, or if the egg does not break, then you can consult a nearby gynecologist who can treat you for this with the help of an injection and other treatment if required. Keep on taking folic acid tablets, as they will help you. But as you have not mentioned any information, I am prescribing you a generalized treatment for PCOD and for getting pregnant.

Following are my suggestions:

  1. First of all, improve your lifestyle. It plays a major role in conception.
  2. Eat healthy. Take fresh fruits and vegetables and other healthy food, and always prefer homemade food. Do not consume junk food, cold drinks, excessive tea, or coffee.
  3. Sleep adequately at least for six to eight hours a day. Make sure to go to bed before midnight.
  4. Do not take excessive stress as it will worsen your problem.
  5. Do exercise and walk daily, as it will help to maintain your weight and helps to control the problem of insulin resistance due to PCOD. Do exercises that will increase your pelvic blood flow. It helps to improve your condition. You can do yoga too. It also helps you a lot. You can do sarvangasan, shavasan, etc.
  6. Do meditation and Kapalbhati daily. It will reduce the stress level as well as increase the oxygen flow to the body.
  7. In medications, take Varunadi kwath (Karanja, Putikaranja, Agnimantha) two teaspoons twice a day with a half glass of water for four weeks. Arogyavardhini vati (Shuddha Parada, Shuddha Gandhak, Loha Bhasma) two tablets twice a day with water for four weeks. Aloe vera juice two teaspoons twice a day with water for four weeks.
  8. If you have the problem of indigestion, then take Chitrakadi vati (Chitraka, maricha, etc) one to two tablets twice a day with water after food for four weeks.
  9. If hemoglobin is less than 9 g/dL, then do take Navyasa loha (Trikatu, Triphala, etc) one tablet twice a day with water for four weeks.

After the adoption of a healthy lifestyle and regular medication, you will be able to conceive. But do take care of your blood reports and other reports. Because if everything is fine, only then you will be able to conceive. Otherwise, take treatment for that abnormality too along with this treatment. Sometimes you might not get lucky in starting attempts but do not lose hope for natural conception. You can take time from six months to one year. Also, do take care of your husband's well-being because, for conception, he will also play a major role, and if you feel some laboratory investigation is required, then go for it. I hope you are satisfied with my answer.
