How to treat nasal congestion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 43-year-old male with a height of 5.48 feet and a weight of 174.16 pounds. I have been having nasal congestion for 10 days now and have taken Niacin and Kasahara syrup for the past four days, but there has been no improvement before I tried Allopathy. Please suggest if the medication that I am taking is fine and should continue, or else suggest alternate medicine.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The medicines you are taking are mostly for cough and not for nasal congestion.

I suggest,

  1. Haridra Khanda (Haridra, Triphala, Trikatu, Nisoth, Nagar Motha, Ajowan, Kutki, Chitrak, Ela, Dalchini, Jirak, Dhania, Ajamoda, sugar, etc. with Lauha Abhrak Bhasma) one teaspoon mixed with one teaspoon honey, taken a day after food thrice.
  2. Anu Thailam (Cedrus deodara, Cyperus rotundus, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Lotus, Solanum indicium, sesame oil, cinnamon, and goat milk) two drops in each nostril, twice a day. When you put this nasal drop, it may come to your throat; in this case, spit it out. If you swallow it mistakenly, it is fine as it is harmless.
  3. Mahalaxmi Vilas Ras (nutmeg, camphor, Swarna bhasma, Rajat bhasma, Vang bhasma, Abhrak bhasma, Shuddha Gandhak, Kajjali, Tamra bhasma) one tablet daily after food.

These medicines are available in Ayurvedic stores.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

Please let me know which company is suitable for all these medicines. Also, when can we apply Anu oil to our nostrils before sleep, after a bath, or any time of the day? When do I have to stop these medicines? Also, when should I observe that it starts giving a result?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I suggest you take Anu Thailam in the morning and evening around 8.00 AM and 8.00 PM. These products are easily available at stores and marketed by many renowned companies. You may choose any. Continue until the symptom reduces fully. You will start to note results in two or three days.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello,

Thank you for the reply.

The shopkeeper said that Haridra Khanda is used for itching and skin issues. Does it help for cough as well? Also, my BP has been on the little higher side for the past week. I am monitoring it, and it is hovering around 145 and 98. Is there any medicine to keep BP under control? The allopathic doctor has given temporary medicine. However, I do not want to go through allopathy. Also, I am having a lot of stress, so two to three times a week, I have a headache as well.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Please take medicines with faith in the doctor. Otherwise, medicines will be ineffective.

Haridra Khanda reduces pitta and vata, which causes a non-productive cough. If I give you cough medicines, I will be as good as the shopkeeper. The difference between an Ayurvedic doctor and others is that we diagnose based on the doshas. And based on the region of origin and the dosha, we select medicines. For example, in your case, it is the upper respiratory tract where vata and pitta are vitiated. So Haridra Khanda was selected for you. Concerning your blood pressure (BP), control your stress levels first. I suggest you take tablet Brahmi (Bacopa monieri) one tablet twice daily before food. This manages both your blood pressure and stress levels.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

This helped me to understand better as well. Which brand should I opt for, Brahmi?
