Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am seeking advice for my girlfriend. She has been suffering from severe migraines for many years. Currently, she takes Sumatriptan, which helps occasionally, but she is concerned about taking it too frequently. She experiences migraines very often, at least once a week, and sometimes they last for more than five days. Her neurologist prescribed Topiramate a couple of months ago, but she stopped taking it because it caused extreme depression. She has consulted many doctors, but no one has been able to determine the underlying issue. She has tried almost everything except acupuncture. She is feeling increasingly restless and discouraged about finding an effective treatment. Do you have any advice, perhaps even natural remedies that we could try? Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query. Migraines have become a common health issue these days. They are mainly caused by an unhealthy lifestyle and poor eating habits. Here are some instructions to help with the problem:

  1. Avoid loud music and sounds as much as possible.
  2. When going outside, avoid direct sunlight. Wear sunglasses and try to cover your head.
  3. Minimize your consumption of spicy food, junk food, and caffeinated drinks.
  4. If you smoke or drink, try to avoid these habits.
  5. Aim to sleep before midnight, ideally around 10 p.m. If that is not possible, try to sleep before midnight.
  6. Avoid using television, laptops, and mobile phones one hour before sleeping, as the blue light from screens can disrupt your sleep pattern and potentially lead to other issues.
  7. Walk for at least 30 to 60 minutes daily, preferably in the morning. Morning walks are highly beneficial. If you cannot spare more time in the morning, even 10 to 15 minutes of daily walking can help.
  8. Some cosmetics like deodorants or perfumes may trigger migraines, so consider avoiding them.
  9. Soak one teaspoon of coriander seeds powder in one cup of water overnight and drink it on an empty stomach in the morning. Do this regularly.
  10. Soak five almonds and raisins in water at night and eat them the next morning.
  11. Take two tablets of Shir Shuladi (Vajra Ras) twice a day with water after meals for four weeks. Do not swallow the tablet; chew it and then take it with lukewarm water.
  12. Try Pathyadi kadha. Take 0.5 fluid ounces of this kadha twice a day with water after meals for four weeks.
  13. Use Brahmi oil for a gentle head and scalp massage daily, or do it one night before washing your hair.
  14. If there is a Panchakarma center nearby, consider body massage with Maha Narayan oil once a week. If not, you can use this oil at home for a weekly self-massage.
  15. You can also inquire about procedures like Shirodhara and Shirobasti at a nearby Panchakarma center, as they can be helpful for your condition.

Consult with me again after three weeks to discuss your progress. I hope you find my advice helpful.

Thank you.
