What is the ayurvedic solution for menstrual problem?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have doubts regarding indigestion, hair fall, acne, and irregular and short menstrual cycles, which have been lasting for the past few days. Are all these interrelated?

Currently, I am taking Zandu Pancharishta tonic for stomach ailments and planning to go for Hempushpa or Ashokarishta for menstrual problems. Will these tonics help in providing a permanent solution?

If not, please suggest me the treatment plan.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You asked it rightly. All these problems are interrelated. Please follow my advice for three months, but you can see results within two months.

The treatment plan for you is:

  1. Ashokarishtam plus Kumaryasavam (ashoka, guda, amla, kumari rasa, haritaki, and dhataki flowers) should be mixed together and stored. Take one fluid ounce after breakfast and dinner.

  2. Shatavari gulam (shatavari juice extract, jaggery, and ghee): two teaspoons at bedtime with milk.

  3. Apply Acnovin cream (turmeric, manjishtha, neem, saffron, and aloe vera) on the face after washing with warm water.

  4. Use Dermafex soap (haldi, majith, neem, and tulsi) to wash the face.

Preventive measures that you should follow are:

  1. Drink 12 cups of warm or room-temperature water every day.

  2. Wash your face five to seven times a day, at least twice with warm water.

  3. Avoid fast food, spicy food, pickles, chips, excessive sugar, dairy products, non-vegetarian food, preserved food, carbonated drinks, deep-fried food, and coffee. Green tea may help.

  4. Exercise daily for a minimum of one hour to promote good sweating.

  5. Control dandruff with a high-quality anti-dandruff shampoo.

  6. Avoid daytime naps and staying up late; sleep early and wake up early.

  7. Eat more vegetables. Consume only three meals a day, but eat until full. Avoid snacking in between meals. Meal times should be fixed and followed consistently.

Revert back after a month to an Ayurvedic specialist.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Your advice is very helpful. Please resolve the following concerns:

  1. I forgot to mention leucorrhea. Can that problem be resolved by taking these medicines, or is there a different medicine for that?

  2. Please tell me the brands for Kumaryasavam and Shatavari gulam.

  3. Shall I stop using Zandu Pancharishta?

  4. I have started taking Amla juice and Giloy on an empty stomach in the morning. I hope that this will not interfere with these medicines and will not have any side effects. Should I stop taking them?

  5. As you mentioned, to avoid dairy products, should I lessen the amount of milk I take?

  6. Should I take Ashokarishtam and Kumaryasavam together, one fluid ounce of each, or just one fluid ounce?

  7. Can I take warm lemon water?

  8. Will this three-month treatment plan completely resolve all my problems?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The following are the answers to your doubts.

The treatment already mentioned is enough to treat leucorrhea (white vaginal discharge). You must stop using Zandu pancharishta, as I do not trust commercial ones, and there is no need to take Pushyanug choorna. Your habit of taking Amla juice in the morning is a good practice. You do not need to avoid milk, as it is an exception.

Combine Ashokarishtam and Kumaryasavam to make one fluid ounce without mixing water. You can take warm lemon water, but without sugar. If you follow every piece of advice diligently, it will solve all your problems.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

My periods last for two or three days rather than being a normal five-day cycle.

  1. Will Ashokarishtam help in this case?

  2. Will the medicines suggested by you help in resolving stomach ailments like mild constipation, gastric problems, slow metabolism, and digestion? If not, please suggest medicine for the above issues.

  3. Will yoga help with my problem? Which asanas would make a difference?

  4. I am deficient in vitamin D, and my doctor advised me to take Rebosoft 60 K, one tablet every week for up to four weeks. Can I take this supplement along with the medicines you suggested?

  5. What is the alternative treatment for this vitamin D deficiency? Which will keep vitamin D levels up to the mark if I do not go for this supplement? Please suggest a better supplement.

  6. Do the medicines you suggested have side effects? Would they increase Pitta?

  7. I always feel fatigued, even if I do not do any work. Please suggest a remedy to stay active.

Please suggest a tip to keep Pitta, Vata, and Kapha in balance.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please follow my advice. The medications I suggested are enough to solve all problems.

  1. Yes, yoga will help you. Practice surya namaskara, pavanamuktasana, kapotasana, bridge pose (setu bandhasana), and butterfly (baddha konasana).

  2. You can follow the suggested supplements. Sunlight is the natural source of vitamin D.

  3. Drink lots of water, as I suggested, and avoid spicy food.

  4. Start with daily exercise of 30 minutes every morning. In the initial days, you may feel fatigued, but later you will regain your energy.

Eat well, include all six tastes in your food, eat seasonal fruits and vegetables, eat more greens, drink a lot of water, exercise daily for one hour, and apply sesame oil all over the body 30 minutes before taking a bath to maintain Pitta, Vata, and Kapha balance. I would prefer Neelibringadi thaila (taila, neeli, bringaraja) or bhringamalakadi thaila (bhringaraja, amalaki, sesame oil) for hair fall.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Do not worry about your problem. Now, I am taking care of it. I understood your problem correctly, and so I combined Kumaryasavam and Ashokarishtam. Just start following my advice. Everything will be on track within two months, but continue the medication for three months.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply

Right from the last period, I am experiencing thick, sticky, cottage cheese-like white discharge and mild burning while urinating, which vanishes if I increase my water intake.

  1. Is there any chance of a vaginal infection?

  2. Please let me know what needs to be done to rectify this.

  3. Please suggest some natural ways to get rid of this.

  4. Is there a need to go for some investigation by a gynecologist for this?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I mentioned in my previous answers to drink a lot of water. You say that urinary irritation vanishes if you take more water, which shows that you are not taking enough water. Water plays a vital role in the natural healing process.

The treatment plan for you is as follows:

  1. If possible, take two teaspoons of fresh aloe vera juice early in the morning on an empty stomach.

  2. Boil six to eight Gokshura (tribulus) in four and a half cups of water and drink the water throughout the day.

  3. You can stop Ashokarishtam and continue all other medications.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I am following your advice diligently and taking all medicine on time with lifestyle changes. But I keep getting acne, and it is mainly happening around ovulation and before the start of my period. Is there any hormonal imbalance?

I have been taking medicines for the last two months, and the acne is hampering my self-esteem. Please give me a solution.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Good to know that you are following all my advice. Yes, there is a hormonal imbalance, and hence, you are getting acne.

  1. What about your general health condition?

  2. Is there any improvement in the menstrual cycle?

If you have at least 50 percent improvement in other health conditions, then please continue the same prescription with the same diet and exercises. If there is no improvement at all, then you must visit an endocrinologist.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I do observe some improvement, and my general health is coming back on track. I have noticed less hair fall, but I cannot quantify it as 50 percent or less. The most important reason I would like to stick to your regimen or natural regimen is that it gives long-lasting results.

  1. Please let me know how long I need to continue the medicines.

  2. Is there any need to add more drugs or liver-detoxifying herbs?

  3. I do not want to go for hormone therapies preferred by an endocrinologist.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As your general health is improving slowly, your hormonal balance will come back with time. Daily exercise, discipline in food, and other activities will give the desired result soon.

  1. Do not forget to wash your face every two hours.

  2. If possible, you can take two teaspoons of fresh aloe vera juice every morning on an empty stomach with two glasses of water.

The rest will be alright. The more you worry about your face, the more problems you may develop. Keep yourself happy and enjoy every moment of life. This natural method will take time but will have a definite result.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Please let me know how long I need to continue this medication. As of now, it has been two months. Before my MC (menstrual cycle), I faced some PMS symptoms like mood swings, backache, nausea, and bloating.

  1. Will these symptoms resolve with time once the hormonal system gets balanced?

  2. I hope there is nothing to worry about.

  3. May I know if a shift in menses by two or three days is considered normal, or should it be a strict 28-day cycle?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

A peaceful and happy mind is the key to your cure. There is nothing to worry about with a two or three-day variation in the menstrual cycle. I especially recommend that you start practicing yoga.

The treatment plan is as follows:

  1. Learn yoga from a good yoga teacher.

  2. Practice Surya Namaskar, Pranayama, Pavanamuktasana, Badhakonasana (butterfly asana), Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (bridge pose), and Kapotasana (pigeon pose).

  3. Daily exercise for one hour is essential to bring complete balance.

For further doubts, consult an Ayurveda specialist.

Preventive measures are as follows:

  1. Eat more green leafy vegetables.

  2. Drink plenty of water.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

My menses occurred on time as expected this month. However, the primary concern is that after starting the medications, I am noticing brown spotting and brown discharge before my period for three to four hours, and then normal bleeding begins. This had not happened earlier. I also noticed a blood clot.

  1. Is this normal?

  2. Do I require a gynecological examination?

  3. What are the signs of a healthy period?

  4. The color of the blood is light red and not as bright red. Is this normal, or does it symbolize some underlying problem?

I am also experiencing painful periods with pelvic and stomach pain on the first day. Additionally, I experienced black-colored stool for a month during the initial days of medications.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Since you have completed only two months with the suggested regimes, it is advised to be patient and peaceful. The hormonal imbalance will take time to become normal once disturbed. Read all my previous advice to check whether you are following everything or not. Dark-spotted blood in the beginning and light blood later is not a reason for worry. It is good to know that your cycle is getting regular.

You can go for gynecological examinations to exclude the possibility of PCOD/PMOS (polycystic metabolic ovarian syndrome). If PCOD/PMOS is there, then diet and regimes will be the same as of now, but I may add a few medicines. Relax and focus on your day-to-day activities. Stop overthinking about your health so that you will be healthy soon.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

As suggested, I went for a gynecological examination and had an ultrasound of the lower abdomen along with some hormone tests. I had the tests just one day before the beginning of the fertile window. I am attaching the reports here. Please help me understand the following:

  1. Is there any possibility of PCOD/PMOS?

  2. Is there any imbalance in the hormonal profile?

  3. What would be the course of action from now onwards?

  4. For how long do I need to continue the prescribed medicines?

  5. Is there any need for more medication based on the reports?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your reports are normal (attachment removed to protect patient identity), and there is nothing to worry.

Are you practicing yoga as I advised? Stress reduction plays a vital role in your recovery. Please follow the same for one more month; you will be alright. Be cool and cheerful. You will get well soon.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
