How to gain weight while suffering from hyperthyroidism?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old woman. For the past three years, I have been suffering from thinning of hair and scanty menstruation, which lasts for only two days. My BMI is 17. Also, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. For two months, I took Shatavari Gulam and Rajapravartani, but there was no change. My TSH levels are 0.03 mU/L. So kindly suggest some ayurvedic medicines for the same. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through the health issues described by you.

Hyperthyroidism causes scanty or irregular menses. Hand tremors, feverish feelings, irritability, dry hairs, and intolerance toward heat are also symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels are decreased. This means there may be increased T3 and T4 levels, which leads to hyperthyroidism. Difficulty in weight gain or weight loss is also due to increased thyroid function. You need to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Exercise and medicine will also improve your health. Video consultation is advised for detailed guidance and medicine prescription because the prescription is not allowed without video consultation.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Investigations to be done

Investigations to be done are a thyroid function test and a complete blood count (CBC).

Treatment plan

I suggest regulating function and hormone secretion from the thyroid gland for treatment. To adopt a healthy lifestyle to manage thyroid issues. Detoxification of the body to eliminate excess doshas. To increase muscle weight to improve BMI (body mass index) to a healthy category (19 to 24 mU/L).

Preventive measures

I suggest avoiding eating bakery products, maida, oily, spicy, and preserved food for prevention. Avoid eating fish. Avoid both day and late-night sleeping. Do anulom vilom pranayam for five to ten minutes daily. Include beetroot, spinach, salad, and dates in the diet.
