I have been taking medications for high blood pressure, blood sugar, and heartburn. Can I take naturopathic medicines along with other drugs?

Q. Can naturopathic medicines be taken along with anti-diabetic or anti-hypertensive drugs to improve the overall health?

Hello doctor,

I am a 34-year-old woman taking three medications currently. Amlodipine for secondary high blood pressure, Metformin to control blood sugar levels, and Omeprazole for acidity and heartburn.I experience severe heartburn around one to two times a month, lasting between four to six hours. Sometimes it starts before bedtime and keeps me awake throughout the night. I take Omeprazole when I anticipate consuming oily or spicy food, but I suspect raw onions or sitting on a stool may also be triggered, though this has not been confirmed. Although I maintain a healthy diet with minimal fatty foods and normal cholesterol levels, I must confess that I do not exercise. Even walking alone tires me out significantly. I genuinely desire to discontinue these medications and live a healthy life. I am curious if naturopathy can assist me and, if so, how it would work. Would the naturopath collaborate with my current medications or recommend stopping them entirely? Considering that dietary changes are likely necessary, I assume some medication might be required despite my already healthy eating habits. Before embarking on a journey to see a naturopath, I would appreciate knowing if there is a silver lining. Furthermore, since my health plan does not cover naturopaths or naturopathic medicine, I am interested in learning about the general costs of treatments and medications in this field. Thank you for your guidance.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for reaching out. I understand your concerns and would be happy to provide guidance.

Naturopathy can assist you in addressing your health issues. Considering that you are already taking allopathic medications, an integrative approach that combines naturopathic treatments with your current medications would be an appropriate starting point, rather than abruptly switching to naturopathic medicine entirely. This integrative naturopathic approach can gradually reduce your reliance on allopathic drugs and potentially minimize any existing side effects. In terms of cost, naturopathic medicines are generally not expensive. However, the pricing may vary depending on your location, the type of natural medicine used, and the brand. It would be best to inquire about specific costs from a naturopath in your area.

Based on your BMI (body-mass index), it appears that you are moderately obese. I suggest adopting a heart-healthy, balanced, and anti-inflammatory diet, preferably Mediterranean. Additionally, incorporating an active lifestyle with regular exercise, stress management techniques, and relaxation strategies would be beneficial. It is suggested you avoid or limit certain foods and beverages that can trigger or worsen acidity and heartburn, such as tomato-based products, citrus fruits or juices, greasy or spicy foods, fried foods, sweets, alcohol, caffeinated beverages, cold drinks or juices, tea (with milk), peppermint, dairy products, and chocolates. Staying well-hydrated by consuming at least two liters of clean and filtered water daily is also important. Drinking up to two cups of green tea daily can have potential benefits. Your symptoms, particularly tired while walking, could be related to your blood sugar levels, hypertension, and lipid profile. It would be better to undergo a cardiology checkup to assess your overall cardiovascular health as soon as possible.

I hope this information proves helpful. Take care, and I wish you all the best.

Kind regards.
