Can consuming Ayurvedic medicines cause dark stools?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 39-year-old female with a height of 5 feet 3 inches and weighing 117 pounds, dealing with infertility, constipation, hemorrhoids, and fissure problems. Because of abdominal pain, I got a CT scan done, and I have a noncancerous hemangioma in my liver of size 2.13 inches.

I started some diet changes like not having meat and white rice and having wheat roti and barley. For two weeks, my hemorrhoids and fissure problem got a little better. My stool is not very hard, nor it is loose, but I am unable to manage a perfect stool to resolve my piles. It keeps getting better and worse, and I am sick and tired.

I started taking some Ayurvedic medicine and started noticing dark stools. Also, the initial stool was hard and then the rest of it was like diarrhea. I am taking some pitta balance and digestive support medicine. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your worries, some of your problems are due to constipation.

Take coconut water, pomegranate juice, seasonal fruits, and vegetables. Include walnuts, almonds, pistachios, raisins, figs, and sprouted seeds. Avoid red chili, tea, coffee, yogurt, spicy foods, cold drinks, alcohol, eggs, non-vegetarian foods, smoking, and tobacco.

I will suggest you take Isabgol (Psyllium husk), two teaspoons twice daily before meals with lukewarm water, syrup Abhayarishta (Haritaki, Vidanga, Madhuka Kusuma) four teaspoons twice daily with an equal amount of water after meals, tablet Dhootpapeshwar arogyavardhini bati (Yashad bhasma, Vang bhasma, lemon), two tablets, twice daily after meals and tablet Kanchanar guggul (Kanchanar, Haritaki, Bibhitaka) two tablets, twice daily after meals. Apply Jatyadi ghrita (Sariva, Tuthya, Sesame Oil) locally twice a day, and wash with neem-treated water. Consult your doctor and take the medicines accordingly.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
