Hello doctor,
A few months ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto disease. The doctor that treats infertility put me on Synthroid, started with a smaller dosage (75 mcg), but since my results were worse after being on the low dosage, they increased it to 112 mcg. I was first unsure if I want to be on Synthroid since I do not believe in prescribed medications that may have side effects. I was told since my spouse has infertility issues (not me) and since I am trying for a baby, natural way or through IVF or IUI, then I have to be on Synthroid forever and Hashimoto cannot be cured. I have been taking all natural homeopathic Vitamins and even when I get sick I also buy natural medicine that was recommended by my Naturopath doctor. I continue to take Synthroid, I lose a lot of hair in my shower even prior to taking Synthroid. What do you suggest I should do? I do not want my body to be dependent on Synthroid for the rest of my life. He also said if I get pregnant I need to stay on Synthroid. I wanted to know from a professional if I am better off taking homeopathic medicine or should I continue on Synthroid?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Great that you are open to trying complementary systems of medicine. I would recommend that you shall consult a homeopath and start appropriate medication. I would also recommend you to take up Yoga practices on a regular basis.
I would like to emphasis few points that might be helpful. According to Yoga philosophy, the mind plays a vital role in manifestation and vitiation of a disease. So, it is of prime importance that you voluntarily suggest yourself not to get worried or think of anything negative thing repeatedly. The simplest way to do that would be breathing practices. I have listed a few breathing practices that might help in balancing the hormonal imbalances.
1.Deep breathing - Please ensure that the duration of exhalation is longer than that of inhalation. Longer the better. And strictly a big no to breath holding. Practice for 5 to 7 minutes.
2.Abdominal breathing: Inhale completely such that the abdomen bulges out stretching your diaphragm completely and then exhale completely. Even ten minutes of this practice decreases oxidative stress and promotes vagal tone (responsible for relaxation).
3.Bramari pranayama: Close your ears with index finger so that you do not hear any external sound. Inhale completely and while exhaling produce a mild humming sound. Keep your concentration on the humming sound. Try to observe where the sound comes from and where all it spreads. It relaxes the entire body and regulates thyroid functioning.
