Does wearing a helmet cause hair fall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 34-year-old male who travels in a two-wheeler for work. I wear a helmet during my journey. I have started noticing hair fall for the past eight months, and the density of my hair has started reducing. I apply coconut oil to my scalp every morning before the bath.

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your first query consult is on us!

I read your query and understand your concern. Hair loss due to wearing helmets for a long time can be due to an already existing hair problem like dandruff or not maintaining proper hygiene or traction of hairs by the helmet. I suggest the following;

  1. Maintain hygiene. Wash your hair twice or thrice a week with a mild herbal shampoo. You can use any mild herbal shampoo from a reputed brand.
  2. If you have dandruff, then take measures to stop it. Curd can be applied on your scalp for thirty minutes. You can wash it after that. This can be done twice or thrice a week.
  3. Before using a helmet, wear a scarf or piece of cloth so that traction can be avoided. It also helps to avoid the direct contact of hair with the helmet. Hence sweat will not have direct contact with the helmet and the chances of infection will be less.
  4. Do not wear a helmet that is too loose or too tight.
  5. Clean your helmet regularly.
  6. As you are using coconut oil it is good in providing moisture to your hair. This can be continued.
  7. Use Bhringraj oil at least twice a week. It can be applied overnight before washing. It will help to reduce hair fall.
  8. Take one glass of milk every night with a pinch of black pepper and turmeric. This will increase your immunity and also reduce hair fall.
  9. Add food like dates, raisins, curry leaves, etc., to your diet.
  10. I suggest you start the capsule Bhringraj. Consult your physician and start the medication accordingly.

Try this regularly. If the hair fall is due to a helmet, you will see very positive results.

I hope you have found your answer.

Thank you.
