Goiter is a condition characterized by the abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. It occurs when the thyroid gland becomes abnormally enlarged, causing a visible swelling in the neck. This condition is usually caused by an iodine deficiency, which impairs the thyroid's ability to produce sufficient amounts of thyroid hormones. Other causes of goiter include thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, thyroiditis, and autoimmune disorders. In some cases, the goiter may not cause any symptoms, while in other cases, it may cause difficulty swallowing, breathing, or speaking.
