Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was healthy and fine in the past having adequate sleep for six to seven hours. Until recently when I noticed a few symptoms like sleeping for 10 to 11 hours, blocked nose on one side, loss of memory, and depression. I also tried neti pot and sesame oil in the nose. Do the symptoms relate to deviated septum? Is surgery the only option in that case? Please help me.

Thank you very much.

Hello,

Thank you for stopping by!

Welcome to Icliniq.com.

I am here to provide expert opinions on your medical issues.

Each symptom that is mentioned is related to certain conditions.

Nasal blockage: Deviated nasal septum can be the reason for nasal blockage. But that does not always require surgery. The extent of nose blockage and troubled breathing determines the need for surgery. The body can be affected easily by allergies and colds along with frequent sneezing episodes. I suggest you visit a nearby ENT doctor to confirm this issue. Endoscopy (examination of the internal nose with cameras) will be performed if required and depending on the examination report, the necessity of surgery can be known. Consider visiting another doctor for a second opinion if you are not satisfied with the treatment option. Alternate therapies like ayurveda or homeopathy or naturopathy can also be opted if it is not an emergency condition. Surgery for deviated nasal septum is not a major surgery that one has to be worried about.

Sleeplessness: Disturbed sleep or sleeplessness can have many reasons which are listed below.

  1. Disturbed body's circadian rhythm due to day and night shifts or due to poor sleeping habits.
  2. Idiopathic Hypersomnia.
  3. Clinical depression or atypical depression.
  4. Hypothyroidism.
  5. Deficiency of vitamins like biotin.

Loss of memory: Irregular sleep can be the reason for loss of memory along with underlying medical disturbances.

Do mention the duration of the neti pot and sesame oil usage and also if any other remedy was tried. These remedies are helpful in a few nasal problems but not in all.

I suggest you do the following.

  1. Have plain water steam twice or thrice a day (a few drops of eucalyptus oil can be added to relieve symptoms of a blocked nose).
  2. Avoid mobile, laptop, and tv one to two hours before sleep (as the blue light of these alters the sleep pattern).
  3. Consume healthy and fresh food.
  4. Avoid taking stress.
  5. Visit an ENT doctor.

I hope your questions were answered.

Thank you.
