Is instilling lemon in nostrils to prevent COVID-19 safe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I saw a video in which a person talked about an Ayurveda remedy for COVID. And as he said, I left three drops of lemon into both my nostrils, and in one minute, I had a continuous cough, and some liquid was coming out of my mouth, and according to him, I had to spit it out. So, it has been one hour, but still, it is continuously coming. So, I am worried. So, please give me proper guidance on whether it is risky and suggest how to stop it.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Squeezing lemon in the nostrils will result in negative reactions in your upper respiratory tract. It looks like your nasal mucous has been irritated. So do not ever try doing that.

Instead, I suggest you instill Ayurvedic oil called Anutailam or warm sesame oil. Two drops in each nostril a day will be effective. I suggest you try steaming in hot water mixed with a few drops of turmeric and eucalyptus oil. It will immediately melt the phlegm in your nasal passage and throat. Also, people with sinusitis will experience this kind of reaction. So do not try using lemon drops. For prevention, I suggest the following,

1. Chyavanaprash lehyam (Amlas, Pippali, Svadamstra) one teaspoon twice daily after food. Ashwagandha churnam (Withania somnifera) 0.10 to 0.14 ounces in warm water or milk two times a day after food.

2. Guduchi Ghana Vati (Guduchi stem) in the morning and night before food.

3. Ayush kwath (Tulsi, Dalchini, Sunthi) decoction 2 fl oz (2 teaspoons of powder boiled in 2.5 fl oz of water and reduced to 2 fl oz).

4. If there is a cough or sneezing, I suggest, Fifatrol syrup (Tinospora Cradifolia, Berberis Aristata, Achyranthes Aspera) and Talisadhi churnam (Abies webbiana, Piper nigrum, Zingiber officinale) with two teaspoons of honey. Consult your doctor and take the medicines accordingly.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
