What are some best ways to relieve a runny nose and cough?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is seven years old. He frequently has a runny nose and a cough that feels accumulated in his chest and throat, producing a light sound when he coughs. We have tried various antibiotics, homeopathic remedies, and even Ayurvedic treatments, but none have been effective. The color of his phlegm is pale, light, and greenish-white. Please suggest an appropriate treatment.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query and understand your concern.

Check if he has been frequently suffering from the same issue; it could be due to allergies, weak immunity, or an infection. If you have already conducted some investigations, that is good. If not, consult a nearby reputable pulmonologist, as a long-term cough problem is concerning.

For now, please try this treatment:

  1. Syrup Septilin (tinospora gulancha, licorice, and Indian bdellium.): Two teaspoons twice a day with water after meals for four weeks.
  2. Syrup Koflet (yashtimadhu): One teaspoon three times a day with water after meals for four weeks.
  3. Provide steam inhalation with plain water two to three times a day.
  4. Give him one glass of lukewarm milk with half a teaspoon of turmeric powder twice a day.
  5. Avoid cold water, as well as spicy and sour foods.

Try these activities regularly, and let me know how you are doing after two weeks.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Thank you.
