Cough With Blood

The seriousness of coughing up blood or hemoptysis depends on the amount of blood and the duration. It may come from the nose, throat, bronchus, or lungs. Coughing up blood is associated with respiratory tract infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, bronchitis, and lung tumors. In addition, any trauma, ingestion of foreign body, cystic fibrosis, injury to the arteries supplying the lungs, and tuberculosis can cause hemoptysis, but these require immediate treatment.
