Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
As a worried wife, I am exploring liver illness and how my husband's heavy smoking habits relate to it. I am interested in how detoxification affects liver health, especially concerning Ayurveda. Could you provide guidance on any ayurvedic dietary supplements or lifestyle modifications that could assist in maintaining the health of my husband's liver and lessen the hazards related to excessive smoking? Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
I understand that you are worried about the effects of his heavy smoking habits. Smoking can negatively affect the liver in several ways, such as increasing the risk of liver disease, liver cancer, and oxidative stress. The liver is responsible for filtering and eliminating toxins from the body, but smoking can overload it with harmful substances and impair its function. Therefore, quitting smoking is the best thing your husband can do for his liver and overall health.
According to Ayurveda, the liver is the seat of the pitta dosha, which governs digestion, metabolism, and transformation. When pitta is balanced, the liver functions optimally and produces bile, which helps digest fats and eliminate toxins. When the pitta is imbalanced, the liver can become inflamed and fatty.
I suggest the following for maintaining optimal liver health:
Avoid spicy, salty, fried, frozen, and processed foods, as well as alcohol and caffeine. Take more fresh fruits. Avoid sugary foods.
Drink plenty of water and herbal teas, such as dandelion, milk thistle, turmeric, and licorice, which have liver-protective properties. Also, make him drink apple cider vinegar diluted in water.
Practice regular walking and moderate exercise, along with yoga. Yoga poses that are beneficial for the liver are cobra pose, bow pose, bridge pose, and spinal twist.
Use Ayurvedic herbs and supplements that support liver health, such as triphala, guduchi, kutki, bhumyamalaki, and amla. These herbs can help cleanse, regenerate, and protect the liver from damage. Amla is a very powerful antioxidant food that can be taken regularly. You can make a drink out of amla and mint leaves.
I suggest you consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner to determine the appropriate dosage of medicines and suitability for your husband’s condition.
I hope this information will help you.
Please revert back in case of further queries.
Thank you.
