What causes wheezing and chest congestion to worsen at night?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had chest congestion and wheezing problems for the past three months. I am taking Ayurvedic medicines for this. Every morning, thick white phlegm comes out, but I do not have a cough during the day. I have some relief from the cough after taking the ayurvedic medications. I got a chest X-ray, phlegm test, blood test, and sugar test done, but all are normal. I have respiratory difficulties and loose stools. Why do I have chest congestion and wheezing problems at night? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your sleeping position puts pressure on your diaphragm, leading to mucus building up in your throat. Your hormones change at night, which might be triggered due to excess acid production in your stomach. I suggest you always try to eat fresh and hot food. Avoid refrigerated foods and drinks. Prepare rice using dry ginger and coriander seeds at least once a week. Drink water boiled with tulsi (holy basil) or dry ginger. Instead of tea or coffee, prepare a drink of ginger, pepper, and jaggery.

I suggest you take Haridra Khanda (Haridra, Triphala, Trikatu, Nisoth, Nagar Motha, Ajowan, Kutki, Chitrak, Ela, Dalchini, Jirak, Dhania, and Ajamoda) one teaspoon at night with honey. Vilwadi Gulika (Indian Bael, Holy Basil, Indian Spikenard, Indian Valerian, dry ginger, and turmeric) after food. Apply sesame oil and salt over the chest region for 15 minutes and wash it with hot water. Try to spill one to two drops of eucalyptus oil or tulsi leaves near your pillow. Reduce your stress levels. Try to consume food on time, and avoid spicy, junk, and oily foods.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Probable diagnosis

The probable diagnosis is asthma.

Preventive measures

I suggest avoiding oily, spicy, and junk foods to prevent this.

Regarding follow up

Please follow up after seven days.
