Hello doctor,

I have had chest congestion and wheezing problems for the past three months. I am taking ayurvedic medicines for the same. Every morning, thick white phlegm comes out, but I do not have a cough during the day. I have some relief from cough after taking the ayurvedic medications, I got a chest X-ray, phlegm test, and blood test sugar test done, but all are normal. I have respiratory difficulties and loose stools. Why do I have chest congestion and wheezing problems at night?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First of all, I appreciate your health consciousness that you run two to three kilometers a day. Your sleeping position puts pressure on your diaphragm leading to mucus building up in your throat. Your hormones change at night, which might trigger due to excess acid production in your stomach. I suggest you do the following:

  1. Always try to eat fresh and hot food.
  2. Avoid refrigerated foods and drinks.
  3. Prepare rice using dry ginger and coriander seeds at least once a week.
  4. Drink water boiled with tulsi or dry ginger.
  5. Instead of tea or coffee, prepare a drink of ginger, pepper, and jaggery.

I suggest you take the following medications (consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent):

  1. Haridra Khanda (Haridra, Triphala, Trikatu, Nisoth, Nagar Motha, Ajowan, Kutki, Chitrak, Ela, Dalchini, Jirak, Dhania, and Ajamoda) one teaspoon at night with honey.
  2. Vilwadi Gulika (Indian Bael, Holy Basil, Indian Spikenard, Indian Valerian, dry ginger, and turmeric) after food.
  3. Apply sesame oil and salt over the chest region for 15 minutes and wash it with hot water.
  4. Try to spill one to two drops of eucalyptus oil or tulsi leaves near your pillow.
  5. Reduce your stress levels.
  6. Try to consume food on time, and avoid spicy, junk, and oily foods.

Probable diagnosis:

The probable diagnosis is asthma.

Preventive measures:

Avoid oily, spicy, and junk foods.

Regarding follow up:

Please follow up after seven days.
