Which Ayurvedic medicine can reduce TB drug toxicity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 31 years old and was diagnosed with lymph node tuberculosis (TB) after having enlarged lymph nodes in my left neck, followed by a biopsy. I am currently undergoing TB treatment. Since TB medicines significantly affect my liver, what Ayurvedic medicine can I take to help reduce the toxicity of the TB drugs and support my liver? Can I take Sarvakalp Kwath, which includes bhumiamla, punarnava, and makoy? Will it be beneficial? What do you suggest for liver health?

I also have high blood pressure. Can I take Arjuna's decoction for this? I have heard that cardamom powder may be helpful. Is that true? What do you recommend for managing blood pressure? My echocardiogram is normal. Currently, I am taking a combination of Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Ethambutol, and Pyrazinamide along with Telmisartan.

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The allopathic antitubercular treatment can cause toxicity and damage to the liver and kidneys. It is good to hear that you are aware of this. You can take Sarvakalp kwath (which includes punarnava, bhoomi amla, and makoy), one tablespoon twice a day with an equal amount of water after meals. This can help address your concerns. You may also take Liv 52 (containing caper bush, wild chicory, and arjuna) syrup, two teaspoons twice a day after meals, and Punarnavasava (which contains draksha, honey, and misri), one tablespoon twice a day with an equal amount of water after meals.

To manage your blood pressure, you can take Mukta vati (containing Rauvolfia serpentina) one tablet, and Jatamansi churna (containing spikenard) one tablet, twice a day with normal water. Be sure to maintain a one-hour gap between taking allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with take the medicines with their consent.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Dandelion, silymarin (milk thistle), punarnava, bhoomi amla, kutki, guduchi, and others are said to be beneficial for the liver. In your opinion, which herb is the most potent for addressing drug toxicity, liver regeneration, fatty liver, etc.? Please take a look at the picture. One of my friends is taking the tablet Amlycure DS. Considering the long list of ingredients, is it feasible for all of them to be packed into one small tablet?

Will Mukta vati or Sarvakalp kwath interact with my TB drugs? Is it safe to use them? Lastly, I have heard that arjuna bark and bottle gourd juice are very helpful for the heart. Are they used for mild arterial blockage?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The herbs you mentioned are individual remedies, mainly useful for liver disorders. However, Amlycure DS or Liv 52 syrup or capsules are combinations of these herbs designed for liver health. You can take Amlycure DS (which includes bhringaraja, bhoomi amla, giloe, and mooli swaras), one capsule twice a day with normal water after meals. It is a good combination of liver-protective medicines. Arjuna bark and bottle gourd juice are beneficial for heart issues and arterial blockage. Just remember to maintain a one-hour gap between taking Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines to achieve the best results.

Thanks and regards.
