What natural remedies can help reduce hair fall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My hair density is decreasing, and I am experiencing severe hair loss. It appears to be androgenic alopecia. Could you suggest any natural remedies to reduce this or block DHT (dihydrotestosterone)? I am currently taking antioxidant and multivitamin capsules.

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

To manage your androgenic alopecia, use Bhringraj oil (a blend of bhringaraja, amalaki, and sesame oil) and perform a gentle scalp massage every alternate day. Wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo. Take two Bhringraj capsules (extract of Eclipta alba) twice a day with water for two weeks. Please consult me after two weeks to discuss your progress and any further management. Alternatively, you may choose to consult a reputable Ayurveda physician nearby if you prefer.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regarding follow up

After two weeks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I have been applying Bhringraj oil every alternate day, washing with mild herbal shampoo, and taking two Bhringraj ghana tablets daily. However, I have not seen any significant results so far. My hair continues to fall, thin out, and break more during oiling and shampooing. Both old and new hair, including small growing ones, are breaking. My hair density has decreased, and my hair feels limp. When touching my scalp, I can feel small hairs, especially at the parting, and my hair strands have become brittle.

Could you please advise whether I should continue using this oil and shampoo routine, or if there are other options? How long should I expect to see results? I am attaching images for your reference.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I just reviewed your query and the attached files you sent (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity). It appears you have male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. This condition is primarily caused by hormonal imbalances or genetics. While medications can provide some relief, they cannot completely cure the condition. With treatment, you may see some improvement, and new hair growth could take approximately three to 12 months.

Hair transplant is a newer option for managing this issue, but it is generally recommended as a last resort when there is extensive hair loss. Based on your pictures, you currently do not require a hair transplant.

For now, continue with the treatment mentioned for one month. Additionally, consider taking Asthiposhak tablets (which contain kukkutandatvak bhasma, asthisamhruta, and arjuna) two tablets twice a day with water after meals for one month. Incorporate figs, curry leaves, dates, and raisins into your diet. Take Triphala churan (which includes gaja pippali, kali marich, and shunthi) two teaspoons at bedtime with lukewarm water for 10 days. Avoid consuming anything after taking Triphala powder.

Also, drink a glass of lukewarm milk with a pinch of black pepper and turmeric powder to improve immunity and help reduce hair fall. Follow these recommendations consistently for one month. If you notice improvement, please consult me for further management. If there is no change, you may need to visit a reputable dermatologist after one month.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Regarding follow up

After one month.
