What is the Ayurvedic treatment for anal fistula?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing anal bleeding for the past four months, but I did not take it seriously as I was traveling. Today, I consulted a surgeon, and after examining me, he advised surgery as he discovered a fistula. Can you recommend an Ayurvedic treatment, as I prefer not to undergo surgery? I have read on your website that surgery carries a risk of recurrence. How long does Ayurvedic treatment take for a complete cure, and what would the process involve?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since you do not want to undergo surgery, in Ayurveda, the kshar sutra procedure is commonly performed for fistula in the anus. This procedure involves tying a medicated thread at the fistula site, which is replaced by your treating physician after a few days. Over time, the thread cuts through the fistula tract while also promoting healing. In addition, your doctor may prescribe medications, and you will need to follow treatment to prevent constipation.

Based on the condition of your fistula, the doctor will inform you how long the thread needs to remain in place. The usual time period is two to four weeks, though this may vary from patient to patient. It is a cost-effective treatment with minimal side effects and a low risk of recurrence. You can learn more about it by consulting a nearby Ayurvedic hospital or physician who performs this procedure.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Is the procedure painful? Will hospitalization be required for it?

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The procedure is not very painful. However, some physicians use local anesthesia during it, which numbs the area, so you will not feel any pain until the procedure is over. Local anesthesia involves an injection at the site of the procedure. Typically, this is a daycare procedure, and you can be discharged by the evening. However, in some cases, if there are complications, the patient may need to stay in the hospital for a day.

Thanks and regards.
