Abstract
Diabetes is a group of diseases that are caused due to the imbalance or excess of sugar (glucose) in the body and this affects how your body uses the sugar.
Glucose is the main source of energy for your body. It not only helps make up our body cells, muscles and tissues but also acts as fuel for our brain. The glucose or sugar levels have to be maintained fairly constant in the body. The excess of sugar in the body leads to various health problems.
The cause of diabetes varies from person to person. It is considered a genetic disorder and runs in families. However, anybody can suffer from it, even if it does not run in your family. Some risk factors include sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, extremely stressful life, lack of sleep, etc. These factors increase the likelihood of getting diabetes.
There are two types of diabetes - type 1 and type 2. There is also a stage called prediabetes which is reversible diabetes. It is mainly caused during pregnancy where sugar levels are higher than normal but not so high as to classify as diabetes. In such people, usually, the sugar level comes back to normal once the baby is delivered.
Type 1 diabetes - Usually, it appears in childhood or teenage life. However, it can occur at any age.
Type 2 diabetes - Most of the time, it appears at an older age, that is, after 40 years. However, this type can also be seen at any age of life.
The symptoms experienced by each individual depend on how much the sugar is increased in your body. The most common symptoms are:
Millions of people have been suffering from diabetes and its related complications. And millions of people have been taking conventional medicines for this problem. We all know there is no cure for diabetes and hence patients have to keep on taking the medicines every day, either in the form of tablets or Insulin. The practitioners of conventional prescribe Insulin in the treatment of diabetes. This is more like a replacement therapy where diabetes becomes a lifelong disease and patients have to take Insulin every day. This is so troublesome as well as expensive.
In such cases, homeopathy can be very effective in treating diabetes. Homeopathic medicines mainly act on the pancreas, allowing it to produce adequate amounts of insulin. There are so many best homeopathic remedies given for diabetes.
Here is the list of best and specific homeopathic medicines for the treatment of diabetes. But remember, below mentioned remedies are very specific remedies. These remedies work well when given with classical remedies which are usually prescribed after considering the complete history of the patient (including mental and emotional).
Kindly note that it is advisable to consult your physician whenever you take homeopathic remedies along with allopathic medicines as you are likely to see some fluctuation in the sugar levels. Do not stop the allopathic remedies or Insulin injections without consulting your physician.
Abroma Augusta is regarded as the best in homeopathy for diabetes. It is prescribed when the patient experiences weakness due to muscle weight loss. It is also used in patients with a dry mouth or increased thirst, and frequent urination. Abroma Augusta is also helpful in patients who suffer from insomnia or sleeplessness caused by high blood sugar levels.
Certain research shows that homeopathy can manage diabetes effectively when used alongside regular treatment for diabetes. In one such study, it was documented that when homeopathic treatment was given to people in addition to the normal medication, they showed better blood glucose control and improved A1C levels after one year.
Currently, there is no permanent cure for diabetes; however, it can go into remission when no signs of the disease are seen in the body, but the disease is technically present. The doctors are still not sure about exactly what constitutes remission, but it is believed that an A1C level below 6.5 percent is a major factor (A1C levels evaluate the blood sugar levels over three months).
Certain studies have shown that it is possible to reverse diabetes in some cases through weight loss and dietary changes. Normal blood sugar levels can be achieved without medication. This does not suggest that diabetes can be cured completely. A healthy range of blood sugar levels can be maintained without medications, but the patient might need to take the medications again if the glucose levels are not controlled effectively.
The cure for diabetes through ayurveda is still debatable. Treatment of diabetes in ayurveda is done by maintaining healthy blood glucose levels. The treatment includes holistic purification treatments, ayurvedic supplements, and remedial massages provided by expert ayurvedic practitioners. The treatment aims to control diabetes and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Syzygium jambolanum is one of the most popular natural homeopathic remedies for treating diabetes mellitus. It acts by efficiently decreasing blood glucose levels. It has also proved to be effective in treating long-standing ulcers in diabetic patients.
Diabetes cannot be cured by walking, but normal blood glucose levels can be maintained through regular exercise or walking. It is one of the most basic forms of exercise and is highly effective in reducing blood glucose levels. Sometimes patients on insulin might find it difficult to reduce their blood glucose levels even after increasing the insulin dose. In such cases, walking is helpful in bringing back the glucose levels close to normal.
Some studies indicate that fasting may be helpful for diabetic patients. However, The American Diabetes Association does not recommend it as a method of diabetes management. Rather it suggests lifestyle changes, including medical nutrition therapy and more physical activity, as the cornerstones for weight loss and good diabetes control.
Rosemary is a natural herb that can be used to decrease blood sugar levels. Rosemary is a delicious component used in soups and curries. It not only promotes weight loss but also balances blood sugar levels. Rosemary also helps in reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases good cholesterol (HDL).
No particular natural substitutes for insulin have been identified yet. However, certain herbs and spices have been proven to increase insulin sensitivity, like turmeric, fenugreek, ginger, and garlic. These herbs and spices also have other medicinal properties and health benefits.
The homeopathic remedies for diabetes include
- Syzygium jambolanum or S. cumini (black plum) helps relieve weakness, thirst, skin ulcers, and excessive urination.
- Conium or hemlock may be helpful in nerve damage or diabetic neuropathy.
- Uranium nitricum can also be used in excessive urination, swelling, nausea, and burning with urination, and phosphoric acid may help in the treatment of confusion or heavy head, frequent urination at night, and hair loss.
The American Diabetes Association regards eggs as a great food for diabetic patients as they are a great source of protein (one egg contains seven grams of high-quality protein) and other essential nutrients. In the past, diabetic patients were advised to limit their egg intake due to the cholesterol content, as these patients are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Therefore eggs can be beneficial for diabetic patients with no or low risk of cardiovascular disease.
Diabetic patients should not consume canned vegetables that contain high levels of added sodium and vegetables cooked with lots of cheese, butter, or sauce. Other vegetables that must be avoided are potatoes (both sweet and regular potatoes), corn, peas, and butternut squash.
There is no specific diet that works best for every diabetic patient. The health care provider may ask the patient to consult a diabetes educator or a registered dietician who can help design the best eating plan. The eating plans for diabetes patients have certain common things, like eating the right amount of food at the right time. The best diet for diabetes means eating healthy food from all food groups, like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and non-fat or low-fat dairy products.
Diabetic patients should make changes in their lifestyle to avoid future complications of the disease. Three major tips that must be followed include:
- Exercise or Increased Physical Activity: It helps control blood glucose levels and enhances the body’s sensitivity to insulin.
- Losing Extra Weight: Losing weight decreases the risk of diabetes. One study conducted on a large group showed that the risk of diabetes is reduced by 60 percent by reducing 7 percent of the body weight through diet and exercise.
- Eating Healthy Plant Foods: Plant food contains vitamins and minerals, and carbohydrates required for a healthy body. The diet of diabetic patients must include dietary fiber; fruits, such as tomatoes and peppers; nonstarchy vegetables, such as leafy greens, cauliflower, and broccoli; legumes, such as beans, lentils, and chickpeas; and whole grains.
