The herb Shatavari has been used for nearly 3000 years in Indian medicine and as a part of the traditional Ayurvedic system of medicine. However, it is not currently prescribed for any specific health ailment and is used only as a supplement to boost immunity. This article will discuss all the possible health benefits, the potential side effects of the Shatavari herb, and how it can be consumed.

What Is Shatavari?

Shatavari otherwise known as Asparagus racemosus is a popular herb supplement. It is an adaptogen (a herb that can normalize and regulate the systems of the body), and an aphrodisiac (a herb that can stimulate sexual desire) belonging to the asparagus family. This herb is used commonly in Asia and specifically in most parts of India. They are also imported to other developed countries throughout the globe. Nutrition experts recommend this herb supplement to treat a broad range of symptoms. These supplements can be taken orally in the form of tablets, and are commonly available as Shatavari powder, or even as a liquid essence.

Recent research studies suggest that the root of the Shatavari plant could provide a number of health benefits. However, more research is needed before this herb can be recommended to treat specific medical conditions. After consuming the Shatavari plant along with other herbs for 12 weeks, there was a significant reduction in clinical symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats in the participants. However, there were no clinical differences in the female reproductive hormone levels.

B. Antioxidant Effects :

In general, plant-based sources of anti-oxidants protect the body with immunity boost and prevent cellular damage caused by free radicals, including the development of certain cancer cells. Shatavari herb has loads of essential plant-based antioxidants that can support the body’s immunity. This herb is also used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to combat oxidative stress, which is a common cause of most chronic diseases.

C. Anti-depressant Effect :

A research study conducted by cellular and molecular neurobiology in the year 2014 reports that the Shatavari herb was helpful in reducing anxiety in animal models like rats and even in humans. The herb interactions of Shatavari with serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) systems (systems involved in causing anxiety or stress) in humans were studied. The Shatavari herb was found to reduce anxiety. Similar research was also published in pharmacology, biochemistry, and behavior in the year 2009 aiming to demonstrate the efficacy of the Shatavari herb extract.

D. Boosts Breast Milk Production:

Shatavari herb is believed to be an effective substance that boosts breast milk production in mothers during the lactating period since the herb is a potent galactagogue (to promote lactation). Shatavari is commonly recommended by Ayurvedic practitioners for this purpose.

E. Miscellaneous Health Benefits:

Other studies report the efficacy of Shatavari herb in relieving gastric ulcers, coughs, and colds. It is also shown to lower blood sugar levels. However, more studies and research is required on the effects of this herb on systemic health.

Is It Possible to Get Shatavari Allergy?

One can get affected by Shatavari allergy. Anyone suspected of having an allergic reaction after consuming Shatavari herb is recommended to consult a healthcare professional immediately. Few signs to look for Shatavari allergy are mentioned below.

  • Difficulty in breathing.

  • Itchy skin or itchy eyes.

  • Skin rash or hives-like reaction.

  • Tachycardia (increased heart rate).

  • Dizziness.

  • Lack of focus.

How Are Shatavari Supplements Used?

Since Shatavari herb is currently not recommended by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), it is advised to check for the composition, quality, and purity of the herb before consumption. And there are no current dosage recommendations for this herbal supplement. Shatavari supplement is available in most countries in the form of powder, tablet, or liquid.

  • The commonly recommended dosage of Shatavari tablets is around 500 milligrams and is advised to not exceed this dosage in a day. They are generally advised once a day or twice.

  • Ayurvedic practitioners and nutrition experts commonly prescribe the liquid dose or formulation of Shatavari extract to be diluted in water or juice before consumption to improve efficacy.

  • Shatavari powder which is manufactured from the roots of the Asparagus plant is one of the most popular herb supplements in Asia. This powder is not related to the asparagus stalks that are normally seen in the local grocery store called Asparagus officinalis which also has loads of health benefits. However, it is not the same plant, shatavari is rather an Asparagus racemosus herb which is native to India only.

  • The traditional way to use this powder is to mix the powder with water at room temperature. The taste of Shatavari powder is a combination of sweetness and bitterness. Shatavari powder prescribed by the healthcare provider or nutritionist can be consumed by mixing the powder with milk or juices.

Shatavari herb is an adaptogenic herb and the primary benefit of this herb is to aid in hormonal regulation released by the hypothalamic, pituitary, and adrenal glands.
