Abstract
Some of the ayurvedic herbs are easily available at our home. Simple home remedies handmade from such herbs can prevent and alleviate some of the common health problems. Some of these remedies have been listed in this article.
To create awareness about some of the useful ayurvedic remedies, this article includes simple home remedies, especially to prevent common health problems at their initial stage itself. Some of these are as follows:
Seasonal cough and cold - Take eight to 10 leaves of tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), a pinch of black pepper and half a teaspoon of ginger powder. Boil this in a glass of water until it becomes half. Take this decoction twice daily.
Bronchial asthma - Take a cup of water and add an equal quantity of milk in it. Now put three to five pieces of pippali (long pepper) in it and boil this until it is reduced to half the volume. Then sieve this decoction and take it in the morning. This remedy is advisable especially to prevent episodic asthmatic attacks during seasonal variations.
Constipation - Take equal quantity of saunf (fennel seeds), rock salt, dried ginger and dried harad (Terminalia chebula) fruit and make a fine powder. Take one teaspoon (5 grams) of this powder at bedtime.
Indigestion - Take ginger and cut it into small pieces. Add some salt and take a few of its pieces 15 to 20 minutes before lunch and dinner.
Raised cholesterol levels - Chew three to five garlic cloves, empty stomach in the morning. It should be avoided by the person suffering from acidity. One teaspoon of Triphala powder twice daily can also help decrease lipid levels.
Joint pain - Joint pain is a very common problem in elderly persons. It is mainly due to degeneration or osteoarthritis of joints like knee, spine, etc. Take 500 ml of sesame oil and add 50 grams of garlic. Boil it for 15 to 20 minutes and then keep this in a bottle after sieving. Use this oil for massage on the affected joint, followed by dry fomentation. It helps in reducing intensity and duration of joint pain.

Ayurveda is a natural system of medicines that encourages natural therapies to regain balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment. The role of Ayurveda is to promote good health and not fight the disease, although the treatment depends upon the type of disease.
Ayurveda is said to be very effective in chronic illnesses, and it focuses on treating the root cause of a disease rather than suppressing the symptoms. As it may not be able to cure chronic conditions but can reduce the symptoms, lower the need for medicine, and can prevent the early-stage chronic condition from progressing.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is considered the king, and Shatavari is the queen. Ashwagandha, or Indian Ginseng, is known for its calming properties and helps reduce stress. Shatavari helps the body cope with physical and emotional stress.
Ayurveda can be very effective in treating conditions with inflammation, and it can also be treated with herbs such as ginger, turmeric, guggul, ashwagandha, and holy basil. These herbs are also very effective in conditions like osteoarthritis.
Vata combines the energy of air and space and is also called ether. It also shows relations with change, mobility, and movement. Vata imbalance causes restlessness in the mind-body complex, which makes a person feel like doing a lot of things together. Some signs and symptoms of Vata imbalance include dry skin, hair, ears, lips, and joints. Internal body dryness can causes bloating, gas, constipation, dehydration, weight loss, poor circulation, muscle spasm, pain, and muscular tightness.
There are various advantages of Ayurveda, such as weight loss, healthy and glowing skin and hair, stress reduction, stronger digestion, cleansing of the body, lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol, and symptoms of any illness.
Ayurveda is one of the purest diets a person can adopt to bring the best out of his life. Ayurveda nurtures the mind, body, and soul and also provides significant support for yoga and meditation practice. In addition, Ayurveda brings a positive attitude to personal behavior; it helps reduce toxins from the body and better health at the cellular level, improves digestion, and reduces stress.
Excess of anything is bad for health, and the same goes for ayurvedic medicines. The high intake or dosage of ayurvedic medicines can lead to many side effects, such as abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loose motions, and allergic rash.
With many advantages, Ayurveda has some disadvantages as it contains heavy metals, which can be toxic to the body and cause severe damage to the body, such as lead poisoning and causing other conditions like depression, memory loss, loss of sensation, and renal failure.
Ayurveda is most commonly used for conditions such as anxiety, asthma, arthritis, digestive problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, rheumatoid arthritis, stress, and eczema.
The patients are also advised to consult the doctor before taking any medicine to avoid complications.
Ayurveda is still considered the best option for treating various conditions, although both conditions have their advantages and disadvantages. There are multiple advantages of Ayurveda compared to allopathy, such as it is less expensive, helps eradicate the disease from the body, and is even helpful in treating chronic conditions.
