Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to gain weight. What to do?

Please help.

Answered by Dr. Sugandh Garg

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

I suggest you get yourself investigated thoroughly to rule out any medical or surgical conditions. You can do the following tests:

1. Complete hemogram.

2. Blood sugar levels.

3. Thyroid function tests.

I also suggest you take a healthy diet rich in carbohydrates to gain weight. You must remember to always balance the same as excess of anything is bad. The carbohydrate-rich diet includes potato, sweet potato, rice, palm fruit, egg, whole grains, apple, watermelon, citrus fruits, dry fruits, homogenized full cream milk, corn, and honey. Also, include a lot of green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, fresh juices, soup, and salads in your diet. Go for regular walks to remain active.

Your breakfast may include:

Take four boiled or scrambled eggs. The white of the egg particularly contains albumin which is a protein and the yellow yolk is calorie-rich which will help you gain weight. Take one glass of milk with two to three scoops of protein powder (if you want to add muscle mass as well).

Midday Meal:

Take a bowl of chicken soup or vegetable soup with a spoonful of cream.

Lunch:

Take a big bowl of black gram, green gram, or other pulses with cottage cheese/soybean/fish/chicken/mutton. Take three to four flatbreads made of multi-grain/whole-grain flour with a bowl of curd. You can also take a glass of buttermilk.

Evening snack:

Take a glass of juice and protein-rich snacks made of gram flour.

Dinner:

Eat any vegetable of your choice with two to three multi-grain flatbreads. Also, take a bowl of curd.

You may try different recipes with high-protein vegetables like soybeans, pulses, and gram flour. Fish has high omega-3 fatty acids.

Caution- Do not overdo with your proteins, as they have to break down for digestion and appropriate levels of uric acid have to be maintained in the body.

Hope it helps.

Thank you.
