Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 34-year-old friend who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes three years ago, is struggling to manage this condition due to irregular work shifts. Recently, he experienced a severe hypoglycemic episode which has worried his entire family. His current treatment involves multiple daily insulin injections, but he finds it challenging to maintain a consistent routine. He is also overweight and has been prescribed Metformin alongside insulin to manage insulin resistance. His wife is exploring technology-based solutions like smartphone apps and continuous glucose monitoring systems but is not completely aware of how to adapt these. Can you please suggest strategies for managing diabetes with an unpredictable work schedule and provide some insights to prevent complications?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
Treatment for type 1 diabetes includes:
1. Taking insulin.
2. Counting carbohydrates, fats, and protein.
3. Monitoring blood sugar often.
4. Eating healthy foods.
5. Exercising regularly and keeping a healthy weight.
6. The goal is to keep the blood sugar level as close to normal as possible to delay or prevent complications. Generally, the goal is to keep the daytime blood sugar levels before meals between 80 and 130 mg/dL (4.44 to 7.2 mmol/L). After-meal numbers should be no higher than 180 mg/dL (10 mmol/L) two hours after eating.
7. Insulin and other medications. Anyone who has type 1 diabetes needs insulin therapy throughout their life. He may try an insulin pump with a monitor which can help maintain and also manage his condition.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
