Is Sertraline safe in early pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 30 years old and just found out I am six weeks pregnant. I have struggled with recurrent major depression since my teenage years and currently take sertraline every day. I am terrified that stopping my medication could bring back severe symptoms, but I am also worried about whether it is safe for the baby. What is known about the safety of SSRIs during early pregnancy? Should I keep taking it or consider tapering off? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It is not advisable to stop antidepressants suddenly, especially if Sertraline has been effective for you. Stopping without medical guidance may lead to a return of severe symptoms, which can be risky during pregnancy. Please speak with your psychiatrist before making any changes; they can help you decide on the safest option for both you and your baby.

In addition to medical care, Ayurvedic practices can offer gentle support for your mood and overall well-being. Consider warm oil massages, calming teas like brahmi, tulsi, or chamomile, slow breathing exercises, and grounding techniques. These can complement your treatment but should not replace prescribed medications.

Support your mental health through diet and lifestyle:

  1. Eat warm, nourishing foods like barley porridge.

  2. Include foods rich in magnesium, omega-3s, tryptophan, vitamins B and D.

  3. Add walnuts, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, and mood-boosting spices like saffron, turmeric, cardamom, and cumin.

  4. Avoid coffee on an empty stomach.

  5. Include dates and figs regularly during pregnancy.

  6. Spend quality time in nature and with loved ones.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
