What might cause skin redness when stepping outside?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Whenever I am outside of my home, my face looks red, and many people ask me why. Could you suggest what I should do about it? Even in the evening, when I am not exposed to sunlight, my face still appears red. I am a 20-year-old male.

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query.

There could be several reasons why your skin turns red when you are outside. One common cause is that your skin might be very sensitive, and it may not tolerate external heat well, leading to heat stress and redness. To mitigate this, drink plenty of water and keep your skin hydrated. This can help reduce the redness to some extent.

During the daytime, UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun might be contributing to the redness. UV rays can affect your skin whether it is sunny or cloudy, as they still reach the earth. To protect your skin, apply sunscreen lotion before going outside, regardless of the weather. Choose a sunscreen from a reputable brand and apply it about half an hour before sun exposure. If sensitivity is the issue, applying aloe vera gel twice a day may also help, as it is beneficial for sensitive skin.

If the redness is due to stress or anxiety, try to keep your mind and body calm, get adequate sleep, and eat fresh fruits and vegetables to help keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

Redness can vary in severity, from mild to severe. If the redness is mild and not causing significant harm, these measures should help, and you should see positive results soon. However, if the redness persists or seems to be related to hormonal issues or other underlying problems, it would be best to consult a dermatologist for a professional evaluation.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
