What causes cheekbone swelling with pigmentation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

There is a little swelling on the skin around my cheekbones, and it is slightly pigmented initially. I thought that because of my improper sleeping posture, I was having this, so I corrected that, but still, there has been no improvement or any change.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concern. Here are some possible reasons for the swelling and slight pigmentation around your cheekbones:

Causes to consider:

  1. Allergic reactions (for example, skincare products, food, pollen).

  2. Sinus congestion or sinusitis (sinus swelling can cause puffiness around cheekbones).

  3. Fluid retention (from dietary salt intake, dehydration, or hormonal changes).

  4. Skin irritation (due to harsh products or environmental factors).

  5. Infections (like cellulitis or localized skin infections).

  6. Underlying conditions (thyroid or kidney issues).

Self-care tips:

  1. Apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day.

  2. Stay hydrated (drink enough water throughout the day).

  3. Avoid any harsh products or allergens.

  4. A gentle massage around the area can help with drainage if it is due to fluid retention.
  5. Maintain good sleep hygiene and a slightly elevated head while sleeping.

When to see a doctor?

If the swelling:

  1. Worsens or becomes painful.

  2. It is associated with fever, redness, or warmth (possible infection).

  3. Persists for more than a week despite home care.

  4. Affects vision or causes severe discomfort.

Since it is not improving despite posture correction, I would recommend seeing a doctor or dermatologist for a closer look. They may check for allergies, sinus issues, or other causes and suggest a treatment plan.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
