Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I suffer from osteofibroma, which I have apparently had since birth. I have two lesions in my left leg near my knee and one in my lower right leg near my ankle. I get pain on a daily basis in both legs, but more in the right leg. The lesion on my right leg seems to be fairly large in X-ray pictures. I was referred to my local hospital where I was told that nothing they could do and that they did not want to take the risk of infection. I would have to deal with the pain for the rest of my life basically. I was told that there is nothing to do with the symptoms and if the pain persists or gets worse or stops me sleeping, then I should go back and get checked again. But, I had already stated to them it stopped me from sleeping at times and I walk with a limp most days. I am a 25-year-old and I have a passion for sports. But, due to my condition, I cannot do much of it. I cannot stand for a long period and cannot walk long distances. I have had to resign from my job due to the pain. I just do not know what to do or where to go. I have even looked into other people's cases in which most had them removed or got offered surgical treatment. I do not understand why I could not get mine sorted. I just feel lost and have no idea about the future. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The osteofibroma treatment depends upon how rapidly it is growing and the size of the lesion. It needs careful evaluation of the rate of progression by seeing serial radiographs, which you must have taken. If your pain intensity is high and affecting your activities of daily living, then surgery is surely a valid option. Till then, you can take painkillers like Ibuprofen to control the pain. I suggest you send me all your reports so that I can read them and see your X-rays and suggest you a possible treatment option.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
