Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was diagnosed with lupus nephritis some time ago, and my symptoms have recently worsened. I am experiencing increased fatigue, swelling in my legs and face, and foamy urine. Recent laboratory results indicate higher protein levels in my urine and declining kidney function.
I am currently taking Prednisone and Mycophenolate. Would you recommend any changes to my treatment plan?
Are there lifestyle modifications you suggest to help protect my kidneys?
Kindly help.
Thank you for your time and guidance.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am sorry to hear that your symptoms have been getting worse.
Your treatment plan may need to be adjusted. Your current plan may not be adequately managing your lupus nephritis, as seen by the increase in protein in your urine and the decline in kidney function. If necessary, your doctor may modify your Prednisone dosage, change your prescription, or add additional therapies like Cyclophosphamide or Rituximab. Regular check-ups will help keep your kidney function and protein levels stable.
Here are some steps that can help protect your kidneys:
Cut back on salt to help manage swelling and fluid buildup.
Try to avoid eating too much protein, as it can put extra strain on your kidneys.
Drink the right amount of fluids, following your doctor’s advice.
Avoid medicines like Ibuprofen, as they can affect your kidney function.
Stay active as much as you can, but listen to your body and rest when you need to.
Keep an eye on your blood pressure, since high levels can make kidney problems worse.
Try to manage stress, as it can affect your overall health.
Lupus nephritis can be complex, but early and appropriate adjustments to your treatment can help protect your kidneys. Your doctor might suggest specific treatments, like immunosuppressive or biologic medicines, to help manage your condition.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
Thank you.
