Patient's Query

Hi My 8 year old son had a local anaesthetic for a tooth abscess. He has since his treatment felt very tired, headache and dizzy. When should this wear off? Are his symptoms concerning? Are there any other symptoms that would require urgent care?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I am a maxillofacial surgeon. And I will be answering your queries shortly.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

The local anesthesia given was 0.3 ml of Utilycaine (Lidocaine/Adrenaline, 20 mg per ml, 12.5 mg per ml).

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Can you please let me know what medications he is currently on? Did the dentist give any painkillers or antibiotics? This anesthetic is quite commonly given because lidocaine is considered safe for children and adults as well. I would also like to know if your son is still feeling dizzy. And how many hours has it been since the treatment? Please provide us with the exact answers so I can assist you immediately.

Revert with the answer to assist further.

Thank you, and take care.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

No, he was not on any painkillers or antibiotics. He had the local anesthetic injection yesterday.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Based on your reply, it has been a long time since then. The anesthetic effects should have worn out by now. Give the child plenty of rest and water, and avoid physical exertion for 24 hours. If this anesthetic effect continues even after 24 hours, I suggest you immediately go for an in-clinic emergency checkup. But if he recovers well, I still advise against walking, swimming, straining, or any exercise for the next week. If he has a fever or tooth swelling, let me know immediately. If he has pain right now, you can give him an Ibugesic Jr. (Ibuprofen and Paracetamol) syrup twice daily, around 5 ml. Also, he did not get any tooth extraction done right; only abscess drainage is done now.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, he just had the abscess drained, not the tooth removed. If it does persist and I need to take him to urgent care, could you please advise what the likely cause is and what treatments they should do to prepare us?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Yes, you can consult me in an emergency anytime if you feel he is exhausted or drained out of energy. But that will only happen if he rests a little. So give the child plenty of rest and take the emergency contact number of the dentist who has treated you. Please do not give him a straw while he drinks water or any fluid. You can give him orange juice or eggs to boost his strength. Even ORS (oral rehydration solution) will work if he feels dehydrated. However, all this is only in the case of dehydration or exhaustion. Just observe for a few more hours, and if he recovers well or feels better, there is nothing to worry about. Let him rest well. If the symptoms do not wear out after 12 hours, please go to the dentist in case of an emergency. They will administer painkillers if needed to relieve your child's headache and rehydrate if required.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
