Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 35 years old, and IBS-D (irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea) is seriously affecting my daily life. I never know when the next urgent bathroom visit will come. I have started avoiding going out and even skipped my best friend’s wedding last week because of this unpredictability. I have tried a low FODMAP diet, fiber supplements, probiotics, you name it, but I still experience bloating, cramps, and sudden diarrhea. It is both embarrassing and exhausting. Are there any medications that can reliably stop the diarrhea?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I am sorry you are dealing with this; it sounds incredibly frustrating. You have irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), which causes unpredictable bouts of diarrhea, bloating, and cramps. It’s affecting your daily life and social activities, which can be very difficult. You have already tried diet changes, fiber supplements, and probiotics, but unfortunately, these have not provided lasting relief.
To help stop diarrhea reliably, antispasmodic medications can be useful. These help reduce cramping and urgency and are often taken on a short-term basis during flare-ups. Other options include peppermint oil capsules, which are a natural remedy that can relieve cramps and bloating for some people. Additionally, therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help manage the stress that sometimes triggers IBS-D symptoms.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
