Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 29 years old, and I have a one-month-old baby. I am still breastfeeding. After I delivered my baby, I had no menstruation for one year, and I got my first menstruation mid last month, and my periods are still continuing, even after 18 days with fresh blood color, and the bleeding quantity is like my third day of cycle, with blood flow not like spotting. I can still feel the blood flow, but not as high as day one or two, and not less either. Is this normal, or do I need to go for any further treatment?
Please give advice.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Congratulations on your baby.
Here is what might be going on:
Postpartum bleeding and irregular periods:
It is common for menstruation to be irregular after childbirth, especially while breastfeeding, due to hormonal changes. Sometimes, the first period after delivery can be heavier or longer than usual.
Bleeding lasting 18 days:
Bleeding for more than seven to ten days is considered prolonged and should be evaluated. Continuous fresh bleeding for 18 days is not typical and might indicate something like hormonal imbalance, uterine lining issues, infection, or other causes.
What should you do?
See your gynecologist as soon as possible for a detailed evaluation.
They may do an ultrasound to check the uterus and other tests to find the cause of prolonged bleeding. If you experience symptoms like dizziness, very heavy bleeding soaking multiple pads per hour, or fever, seek urgent care.
Meanwhile:
Keep track of your bleeding (color, quantity, clots, and pain).
Maintain good hygiene.
Continue breastfeeding if you can, but let your doctor know.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach out to me again if you have further queries.
Thank you.
