Is the burning pain in my upper abdomen indicative of gastritis or another medical condition?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been experiencing burning pain in my upper abdomen area after eating (above the navel) for the past four months. This pain occurs almost after every single meal, and I rarely experience mild pain all over the abdomen as well. There is no fever or fatigue present. I had consumed alcohol occasionally for a few months, about once a week. Could this be something like IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) or an autoimmune condition? Sometimes, my joints suddenly feel a little hot for a few seconds. Do I have some inflammation issues? My rheumatoid factor was normal. Please tell me if the gastritis or ulcer problem could be autoimmune and what tests can confirm this.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern.

The symptoms you have described suggest dyspepsia or gastritis. But the duration of your symptoms is a bit lengthy. I recommend undergoing a lab workup, including a stool test for H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori), liver function tests, serum amylase, and an ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate). If everything comes back normal, we can discuss the possibility of starting proton pump inhibitors alongside lifestyle modifications. Try to avoid alcohol, smoking, stress, painkillers, and spicy food. Remember to stay well-hydrated by consuming ample amounts of water. It is important to note that IBD (Inflammatory bowel disease) usually presents with lower gastrointestinal symptoms.

I hope I have addressed your concerns. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you require further guidance.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
