What to do when a bit of food gets stuck in the throat?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I feel like a bit of food did not go down properly. I am not in pain, and I can swallow water or soft drinks and breathe normally. This happened last night. What should I do?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It sounds like you may be experiencing a mild episode of food impaction, when a small piece of food (such as sliced ham) feels like it’s "stuck" in the esophagus (food pipe). Since you are not in pain, can swallow liquids, and are breathing normally, this does not appear to be a medical emergency at the moment. However, here are some steps you can try:

  1. Sip warm fluids: Slowly drink warm (not hot) water or herbal tea. This can help relax the esophagus and encourage the food to move down.
  2. Swallow a soft food bolus: If you are comfortable, try swallowing a small piece of soft bread or banana to help push the food down.
  3. Try the “carbonated soft drink trick.” Since you are already drinking soft drinks, their carbonation and acidity may help break down certain types of food stuck in the esophagus. Take small sips only; avoid gulping.
  4. Stay active: Gentle walking may also help gravity assist in moving the food along the esophagus.

Please go to the emergency room or contact a healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:

  1. New or worsening pain in the chest, throat, or upper back.
  2. Coughing, choking, or wheezing.
  3. Inability to swallow saliva or sudden drooling.
  4. Feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest.
  5. Vomiting or persistent nausea.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
