Can moving to village make skin dark and dull?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

When I was staying in the city, my skin was bright. But now I have shifted to the village, and my skin is getting dull day by day. My hands and my face are dull. I do not know if it is tan or something else, but my chest and my belly have not changed. What can I do about this?

Please advise

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Many people notice their skin becoming dull or tanned after moving to a village or a new location, especially from a city.

Let us break this down and guide you properly:

Why is your skin dull in the village?

  1. Sun exposure and tanning in villages: You are likely more exposed to direct sunlight when doing chores or outdoors. This causes tanning and ultraviolet (UV) damage, which makes your skin look duller and darker. The chest and belly are protected. Since these areas are always covered, they stay their original color, while hands and faces get exposed and darken.

  2. Hard water: Many villages have hard water (more minerals like calcium or magnesium), which can make skin rough, dull, and dry.

  3. Dust, pollution, and open air: Surprisingly, rural areas may have dust exposure, even if pollution is lower. This can clog pores and dull the skin.

  4. Lack of skincare routine in the village: You might be following a simpler skincare routine or not using sunscreen regularly.

What can you do to brighten your skin again?

  1. Morning routine cleanse: Use a gentle face wash

  2. Tone (optional): Rose water or cucumber toner to refresh skin.

  3. Moisturize: Apply a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer.

  4. Sunscreen (most important): Use sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days. Reapply every three to four hours if outside.

  5. Night routine double cleanse: Use coconut oil or micellar water if you wear sunscreen or makeup, then face wash.

  6. Apply aloe vera gel or vitamin C serum (for brightening and antioxidant effects).

  7. Moisturize well using a night cream.

  8. Weekly care:

    1. Exfoliate once or twice a week: Use coffee with honey scrub or fuller’s earth and rose water to remove dead skin.

    2. Tan removal pack: Besan with curd, a few drops of lemon juice, and turmeric. This has to be applied for 20 minutes and then washed.

Avoid

  1. Harsh soaps on the face.

  2. Going out between 11 am to 3 pm without covering yourself.

  3. Scrubbing too hard (it causes more darkening).

When will you see the results?

Two to three weeks of regular care can show visible brightness. For a long-lasting change and tan removal, continue for two to three months.

Hope this answers your query.

Thank you.
