Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took my first emergency contraceptive pill 35 days ago and had a second pill 33 days ago. My period was due before ten days, but I did not get my periods yet. I took a blood pregnancy test one week ago, and it was negative. What could be the problem?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to iclinic.com.

I understand your concern. Kindly help me know the following to help you better;

1) Do you have a regular menstrual cycle?

2) Did you notice any spotting or mild bleeding after taking the emergency contraceptive pill?

3) Do you have any symptoms like nausea, fatigue, and breast tenderness?

If you take an emergency contraceptive pill frequently, it can make your period irregular and delay your period by up to one week. So, do not worry. If you do not get your period within three to four weeks of taking the emergency contraceptive pill, kindly take a pregnancy test.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I experienced spotting for two to three days after taking the second emergency contraceptive pill. I am not experiencing nausea, fatigue, and breast tenderness.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is good that you had spotting. You need not worry. Kindly wait for one more week and get a pregnancy test done to rule out pregnancy. If the results are negative and the periods are still delayed, you can take hormonal pills to get periods.

Take care.
