Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had unprotected sex on the sixth day of my cycle and took an emergency contraceptive pill, followed by withdrawal bleeding after two weeks, followed by no period on the expected date. Negative pregnancy urine test 21 days after unprotected sex and negative blood serum hCG 45 days post sex. A month after the withdrawal bleeding, my period has not returned. What could be the reason for the delay? Is it a missed period?

Answered by Dr. Richa Agarwal

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your history and understand your concerns.

Withdrawal bleeding is only a side effect of an emergency contraceptive pill(Levonorgestrel). It happens due to the sudden withdrawal of hormones from your body. So, it does not necessarily happen to everyone. You may have menstrual irregularities in your case, which could be due to hormonal imbalance caused by an emergency contraceptive pill. That is why it is a little unpredictable when you receive your next period. Maybe you will get it on time or delay by seven to ten days. As you took an emergency contraceptive pill on time (within 24 hours), there is almost no chance of pregnancy in your case. Wait and watch for your menses. No need to worry about it.

Hope you found it useful.

Feel free to ask for more information.

Regards.

Hi doctor,

Thank you.

My pregnancy urine test and blood tests were negative. My last period was a month ago, and to date, there is no period.
