How to manage dryness and itching around the navel?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the past one and a half years, or a little longer, I have been experiencing very dry and constant itching in and around the navel. There are no wounds or rashes; only the skin becomes very dry, and the itching is severe. This problem is persistent and does not heal on its own. I am very worried about it and want it to be treated completely and permanently. I kindly request your guidance and a complete check-up.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern. Dryness and constant itching around the navel area that has persisted for over a year can be very frustrating. Let us review this systematically. Possible causes of your symptoms: Dry skin/xerosis In areas with poor air circulation, such as the navel, the skin can become dry, especially if you sweat there or clean the area too harshly. Over-washing or using strong soaps can strip the natural oils and make the skin even drier. Eczema (Atopic dermatitis) Chronic dryness and itching are typical of eczema. Even if there is no visible rash, eczema can still be the cause, presenting as dry and thickened skin. Contact dermatitis Sometimes, an allergy to soap, body wash, lotion, or even metals such as belt buckles or jeans buttons can irritate the skin around the navel. This can occur even if there is no redness. Fungal or yeast infection (Candidiasis) The navel area is warm and moist, which can promote yeast overgrowth even if there is no visible rash, causing itching. There is often mild redness or a slight musty smell, but not always. Psoriasis (Less likely) If there are other scaly areas, such as the elbows or knees, psoriasis could also affect the navel area.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
